  • Occoquan Shad - Apr 12, 2012

I am out town, and yesterday I had some time to use laptop. I found I haven't finished making fishing log for Apr 12th Occoquan Shad fishing.

In the Sunday afternoon after work I made the first and the last trip to Occoquan for 2015. I hoped shad arrived, and I catch some of them for the record. There were many anglers after shad.

Do you eat them? I heard they're generally not good table fare, but they're good smoked. Anyway, they look fun to catch.

Shad are protected; catch and release only.

Although all shad and herring are illegal to keep in Maryland, in Virginia there are no regulations on hickory shad.

Interesting, I thought it was odd that hickory shad were not listed in the Va reg...

Good video. I was there today. They are everywhere down there. I was catching a lot of them on shad dart jigs 1/16 and 1/8 sizes. Like you said in your video they are a lot of fun to catch on light tackle.
