I have an extended life battery for my gopro and I can get many hours out of it at 720p...6 hours+. I do bring an extra battery just in case. I don't bring other cameras and just let the gopro stay on full time. I think it would be difficult to try to manage a camera as well as the fish and I can't even remember to hit the mark on FF so I doubt I'd ever remember to start the gopro if I didn't have it running full time. My main issue is trying to find all the places I caught fish on hours of video once I get home.
Having it on full time can lead to some...umm interesting...footage. I forget it's on. When the wind picked up pretty good and I started getting water in the boat at BT last Saturday I belted out a rather humorous attempt at the theme to Gilligans Island. I quickly deleted that when I found it at home by surprise.
