  • Virginia Beach Fishing During Labor Day Weekend

How packed does VB get during Labor Day weekend? I've got a 4 day weekend and wanted to take the wife and kid to the beach and I was thinking about dropping my kayak in and fishing just offshore. Will the waters be too packed with swimmers to attempt this? Are there areas of the beach with less weekend traffic? Will the beach traffic lighten up later in the evening to be able to fish from the surf? Any advice is welcome. I'd like to know how crazy the area gets before I load up my gear.

    Thanks,
    Dustin

It will be pretty crazy on a holiday weekend, but you could still find places to fish. If staying down at the oceanfront, Rudee inlet or Lynnhaven Inlet will be your best bets to go after some flounder or reds (plenty of croaker and maybe spot also). Rudee launch is right there by the Aquarium at the south end of the main oceanfront tourist area. If you want to try fishing the surf, best to drive north til you get past the hotels. When shore drive veers off to the left, you continue to the right and stay along the ocean then find somewhere to park on one of the beach access areas in that section. That time of year in the surf, expect to catch croaker, spot, small bluefish, small flounder, small sharks, maybe a red or small weakfish. If you can get the kayak out into the ocean, I would try trolling for spanish macs and blues. Be on the lookout for cobia also.

There are a couple location and time restrictions on surf fishing in VA Beach as well:

"Fishing from the shore is prohibited from 42nd Street to the Rudee Inlet on weekdays (10 a.m. – 4 p.m.) and on weekends and holidays (10 a.m. – 5 p.m.)"

Forgot to mention that and it is one of the reasons I was recommending going up closer to Ft. Story for surf fishing. It is also generally way less crowded up that way and much nicer imo. When I used to just go sit on the beach years ago, we always went up past 42nd or right inside the Ft. Story Gate. I also used to fish off the rocks at Ft. Story back then with occasional success, but just croakers and spot most of the time.
