Anyone interested or going to CBBT this coming weekend? I'm considering driving down Fri night and fishing Saturday. I know a little about the area, but not as much as I'd like to. Primary targets as of right now are sheepshead and spades, but I could be convinced to look for cobia, reds, or whatever else is around. Also, any general intel on the area would be much appreciated.

From what I hear, you go out of a closed restaurant called Buoy 44. Summer parking is really tight there on the streets- you find a spot somehow (4 AM in the morning)and cart your Yak to the restaurant. Unless you can unload your yak and have someone stay behind to watch it at the launch site while you park. When you go, please let me know how this works out as I have not done it yet- But it sounds not very convenient- I would like to hear what the others say- thanks!

You're correct about the launch being directly besides Buoy 44; however, it is not closed to my knowledge. The launch isn't too bad at all; especially in the AM. At 4:00 AM, there isn't hardly anyone awake. Parking is abundant that early and is available very close to the ramp. If you are able to get the street parking directly across from the ramp you can still have a visual on your kayak. The other options are also close but around the corner of the restaurant.

The only issue I have ever had with the ramp is when I return in the middle of the day. Chic's beach is popular among locals, so its often crowded when you come back in. Beach goers sometimes do not realize you are there when surfing in on the small waves, so you may have to dodge a few girls in bikinis (oh, shucks! ). Loading can also sometimes be a pain if you time it with the dinner rush at the restaurant because they have valet parking right next to the launch loading area.

But all things considered, its a nice place to launch.

Am I losing it or did there never used to be a beach there? There must have been a major beach replenishment project there in the past couple years because I remember launching my kayak pretty much right out of the buoy 44 parking lot years ago. When I was there a few weeks back the beach was verrrry long and like Ravens said was full of beachgoers. It is pretty amusing at the end of the day loading up your kayak and having 100 cars in a row ask you if you're leaving yet, watching fist fights almost break out over spots, listening to euro club music being blasted, etc.

Good info on the launch, thanks. Am I too early for sheeps and spades? I see cobia are in the area, might try that. Are the big reds gone already?

Also, any spots to park overnight near this launch? I've stayed at and fished from Kiptopeke, but that makes no sense if I'm using this launch.

Last edit: is there anywhere to launch from on the E. shore?

I may see you out there if I take a break from cobia chum fishing soon. The beach was replenished this Spring and I strongly recommend using a sand cart - it's several hundred yards of loose sand to the water now. Also, 4 AM is overkill unless there is an event going on. There's street parking available on the west side of the bridge if needed.

Sheepshead have been around for over a month and the spades are just starting to show recently. Bring plenty of bait, because the croaker are out in full swing.

You're right on time for sheepies and spades. As you said, cobia are also in. I would suggest exclusively dedicating one rod to cobia, tied with a colorful bucktail/6" curly-tailed grub combo just in cast you run across one. Leave it rigged because when you see one, you'll need it right at that moment and won't have time to tie one on. Reds are always a possibility when fishing the CBBT, but the typical spring time fishery is over.

As far as staying overnight, First Landing State Park is just down the road. Basically, you drive over the Lynnhaven Bridge (i.e. - Lesner Bridge) and keep going for a few miles and it is on your left. I've stayed there in my tent a couple of times and it is comparable to most any camp site.

On the Eastern Shore, you're basically limited to Kipto or Wise Point. I wouldn't expect as good of a sheepie/spade bite there and you will certainly have to paddle/pedal further to get to the High Rise span of the CBBT. There is a shot at cobia and reds on the ES too.

The wind looks good for the weekend, so that's a plus. There will undoubtedly be some boat traffic, so be alert when around the Small Boat Channels of the CBBT.

Thanks fellas, that's all the information I need unless you want to show me where the fish are and bait my hook. Hoping my new Bixpy arrives in time for the weekend!

Jman, I'm leaning towards the buoy 44 launch and will likely be there around or before sunrise. Holla if you want to fish together.

I tied a big sheepie up on piling number 217. I named him Steve.

                    Good luck!

Unfortunately I didn’t have time for CBBT today, and I’m super jealous of those citations. That one in the pic is solid. Next time.

It might be a couple more weeks before I’m free again, but this is definitely the plan.
