  • Fishing vacation at Cape Charles KOA

    Hey Folks,

I wanted to see if anyone would be nice enough to offer some locations I can take note of for a fishing trip my brothers and I going on next week. We will be staying at the Cape Charles KOA from the 8th through the 13th. We intend to explore the CBBT, Fisherman's Island, Concrete Ship's, Chic's Beach and that should be more than enough for the time we will be in town. That said, weather will play part in the plan and we wanted to get an understanding of some spots that would offer some shelter should the weather not cooperate. AND if anyone wants to meet up and teach us how to catch fish in a location we've never been that's even better too!

    Thanks in advance!

Lynnhaven and Rudee inlets are favorites for when the wind is honking. The ships at Kipto can also offer some refuge from a strong west or east wind. Typical baits would be crabs, clams and assorted gulp. You will catch croaker and small bluefish everywhere you go. I would ask fellow kayakers out on the water what's working for them. You can also search back through past posts on this forum and look for reports from July through September to get an idea of what's biting where. Most people you will meet down there are very friendly and willing to help out a fellow kayaker. Oceans East on the VA beach side is a really nice shop and Chris's B+T is a good one for the Kipto side. Good luck!

The beach launch right at the KOA will get you close to some excellent fishing. It is steep and sand tires are a must. That being said, close in you will find kingfish in the slews to the south just before the bridge. The pound nets before that may hold puppies and trout. If you are after larger quarry, Latimer shoals is about 2+ Miles in front of the KOA. Late afternoon bite for cobia and bulls using cut bait (Chris’ usually has fresh bunker), but catch some hardhead and kingfish earlier in the day and you will be good to go. Plus, a croaker or kingfish on live line will not last long there trust me lol. Be prepared for lots of pullage from the sharks and rays. Finally, the marine police and Coast Guard are very active down there. I have been checked four times this year! Have a FIP number and all your safety gear.

Romo thanks man great tips and your channel got my blood pumping!

Hemmingway thank you as well...we may round out a day or two with a stop at Latimer Shoals. If you don't mind sharing how do you fish for Kingfish? That species has been off my radar while researching.

Fish for kingfish the same as croaker. Use bloodworms, fish tabs (mesh type stays on longer if crabs are stealing bait). By the way kingfish are excellent to eat.

Awesome photos of your trip and congratulations on the nice catches! Spanish mackerel and Cobia are two species I have not landed in Virginia.

Great photos and looks like you had a fantastic trip. Too bad most of us have these pesky jobs that get in the way of more trips like this.

Hemmingway...will most likely book a stay on the other side of the bridge next year to really focus on the bridge. But man what a trip for sure!
