  • Pohick Bay Yellow Perch and Bass - YES YELLOW PERCH

Kent is my new neighbor. Kent asked me if I was the Joe who put Youtube videos about kayak-fishing when he moved to our block few months ago. He did not have a kayak but he had friends who kayak fished in the Washington metro area.

I took him kayak-fishing late afternoon on Sunday. We and his friends went to Pohick Bay Regional Park for Bass and Snakehead.

We never expected yellow perch. But we caught yellow perch @9.5-13 inches on spinner baits for LM or snakehead.

The yellow perch and LM was mixed and we could see them in 1-4’ of water.

Next time I am going for yellow perch for sure.

Nice going, Joe. Haven't been to Pohick since the summer. Any "Potomac Pike" sitings?

Wow, that area looks a lot prettier than I thought it would. The perch were a nice surprise. Thanks for the report.

Might have to hit it up again this weekend. Braid, frogs, spinners, chatterbaits etc...

          John

No Potomac Pikes. I saw a couple of them while paddling over grass bed in 1' of water.

We caught YP in the mouth of the first channel from the north side shore on the google map.

Let us know when you go

Hey Joe hows the grass? Has it started to pull back a bit or is it still overwhelming in some areas?

Thanks for the report and the awesome videos. Is this a place the yellow perch run through, or are they there all year?

I didn't bring the electronics. I felt that the water was below 62F. The grass definitely started pull back due to the cold water temp. Occoquan River looked very stained but Pohick Bay was clear and there was less grass debris in the water. We could cast spinner baits without hooking up too much grass.

I don’t know much about Yellow Perch fishing because I started January this year. But I found that YP are very good eating. Dr. Bill, Ictalurus, know the yellow perch spots in MD close to where you live. Bill inspired me fishing for yellow perch for years, and I finally did it this year.

I am not sure if Pohick Bay is good place for year around. I am hoping YP are there from now until March. I will fish more to find out.

There were two places I went for YP last winter.

Susquehanna, Perryville, MD - January 8, 2011 I think this place good in Dec-Feb:

Those are some nice Yellow Perch. I think they are one of the prettiest fish in the bay and you're right they are very good to eat. Im looking forward to the yellow perch run in the susky next year. This year I missed it by a couple of weeks and only managed to catch a half dozen over a couple of trips, I'll be ready for them next year...
