  • Lake Anna Striper, Bass, and WP (Jan 28, 2012)

Michael and I wanted to catch some fish (possibly for dinner). We went to Lake Anna for WP, crappie and Striper (striped bass).
We bought 2.5 dozens of small minnows for crappie fishing before the launch. We wanted to catch some crappie on live minnows under a Bridge. Before we arrived at the bridge, we caught a striper @19” and a WP.
We live-lined minnows for crappie under the bridge. Redfish caught a small crappie and a small bass on minnows. I had no bites at all
Instead I caught a sunfish and a catfish on small minnows when I fished shore line.
We trolled for WP and stripers after all minnow were gone. We caught 11 WP and 7-8 bass in 25-50’ of water

Fun trip! Joe is too kind and was nice enough to turn around after I realized I left my drive and seat at home! Woops. Don't worry, I had a ridiculous amount of lures with me just in case that I didn't forget. The perch on a waxwing was a new one! I just wanted to do a test swim for rock and hooked up with a 10" WP!

Great report fellas! Wish I could have joined ya! Funny thing is, as easy as they are supposed to be to catch... I have yet to have a Crappie on my landed list. By yak or land. I feel left out the club! LOL

When we arrived at the Launch site. I recognized that I did not bring the wader with me. I have two waders. One supposed to be in the truck all the time in case the other is still wet on a hanger. So it doesn't matter how many I have. I have to rember to bring it with me.

It cracks me up how aggressive those Lake Anna perch are. I haven't caught any perch on that lure in the tidal areas I fish. I'd love to know what they think they're going to do with it once they get it in their mouth.

              Thanks for the report.

Never tried it, so I'm going to have to try some Waxwings. Anyone catch stripers, flounders, or specks on them? Since they are subsurface lures, I would think these lures would not be too effective for fish near the bottom.

              What size did you use?

I was using the Jr, I think it is 4.5"? I really just brought it out to test swim before the spring run. Catching a perch on it was a big surprise!!! It sinks pretty quickly so I'd imagine you could let it bounce then slowly retrieve. It casts a mile though.

Do you guys ever try jigging with spoons like cast masters? I have had great success with White perch vertically jigging them.. If you can locate a school it can be nonstop action.

I have never seen a WP hit a large trolled lure like that...

                  Good stuff.

We talked about it but they seem pretty scattered there. We were catching them roughly 7-15ft down over 60 ft of water in some cases.
