  • Togs are cold water fish, CBBT, Jan 13, 2022

I usually stop tautog fishing after a skunk as the water gets colder, and resume tautog fishing in February.
    On Jan 13, 2022, I had a good day. I caught 3 keepers at 17,18 and 20" out of 14.

    Video Fishing Log:

    Thank you

Nice January tog! That was a lot more action than I would have expected in January. Did you see any stripers?
    Used to fish more.

I didn't expect that good action in January. Actually I think I threw back two 16" togs without measuring them.
Stripers had been almost non existent at CBBT. And the season was closed (still within the Chesapeake bay boundary).
I caught some in Rudee (under 17"). I saw some 26 inchers but the size limit is 28" in Rudee.

We noticed that baitfish activities had been very scarce, especially silverside and peanut bunker for 3-4 years. No baitfish, No stripers? Some said the lack of baitfish is the cause of non-existence of stripers. Stomach of the Specks I caught were empty, No baitfish in them.

I will try CBBT again when the wind is good.

Thanks Joe, I remember us being able to tog and jig for stripers on the same trip which was a lot of fun and something to do when the current started running again. I wonder if it's the Omega boats catching the bunker that's hurt or just general overfishing / low stock of stripers?

Boaters saw the omega boats firmly believe the major cause is the omega boats. On the last Sunday I saw a small school of 3 inch baitfish. The school quickly, in 5 minutes, disappeared when I approached it.

I think I will have better striper actions in Lake Anna. The stocked Hybrid few years ago should be over 24" now.

Joe, Curly on Ernie's board moved down there a few years ago and is catching a lot of hybrids and stripers down there now! He seems to have it dialed in.

Great report! Good to see even when water temps are very low, there's some action to be had.
