  • Shad Run, Apr 10, 2022, Occoquan Regional Park, VA

On the way back home after speck and puppy drum fishing in Rudee 3 days ago, I saw Dogwood flowers while driving on I 64. The first siting of dogwood flowers means this - the arrival of a good number of shad at Occoquan River, VA. The shad run continues 2-3 more weeks from the first siting of dogwood flowers. I fished in the morning of a cold day. I hooked 18. 6 got away. 12 were landed.

    Fishing Log:

    Thanks
    Joe

No exactly true if you're fishing Occoquan. It is illegal to keep either American or Hickory shad that are caught in the Potomac mainstem, or Maryland or DC waters, but the state of Virginia allows unlimited harvest of Hickory shad in their waters, which includes the Occoquan River. It seems extreme, but the prohibition in Maryland and DC is more about concern with people mistaking American shad for Hickories.

That was what I thought years ago. Then, I wasn't sure about the rule because none seemed to know clearly. Anyway, There were anglers who kept them that week.
