  • Kayak fishing road trip

I made a 9-day fishing road trip to NC and VA from July 21-29. John Rentch joined me on some of those days. Although the winds were strong on quite a few days, I still was able to catch 13 species of fish during the trip. I had a personal best redfish from the kayak (30”) and caught a new species – longnose gar (36”).

I wrote up a trip report with a lot of photos that describes where and how we fished and what we caught. Anyone interested in reading the report can visit Google Drive at https://drive.google.com/file/d/1RVJ...ew?usp=sharing. Click on the Download icon to save the .pdf file to your computer.

Great report John. I loved reading all the details and the accompanying pictures. Sounds like you certainly met your goal of catching a bunch of fish not readily available at home. I remember reading your writeup of the Florida trip and remember you got hit with strong winds for much of that trip too... really unfortunate that wind keeps putting a damper on your extended road trips. I think you manage to make the most of it every time anyway.

Dave - You are right about being hounded by wind on my road trips this year. I sent a copy of this recent report to my kayak guide in the Keys. He told me that I need to work on my weather mojo.

It is enjoyable to be in new places and trying for fish that are not available at home. Other than the one really windy morning in VA Beach, I still managed to find fish each day and explore some habitats I don't see near home. Part of my enjoyment is planning the logistics for the trips, and another part is studying weather, wind, maps, and tide charts each day to plan outings that offer some chance of catching success. Having fished in the Chesapeake Bay environment for more than 35 years, I have some sense of the habitats that are likely to hold fish, and how wind and tides will impact the fishing. It is fun and challenging adapting the knowledge I have developed near home to other somewhat similar environments elsewhere.
