  • Tautog, Sheepshead & Puppy Drum, Nov 4, 2022, CBBT, VA

Based on the wind forecast, I thought CBBT (Chesapeake Bay Bride Tunnel, VA) might not be a place for kayak-fishing. I brought the tackle for speck and puppy drum in case I fish in Owls Creek (Rudee). But the wind was mild in the morning. So I fished the CBBT for mainly for Tautog. Puppy drum was expected as a byproduct.

I discovered 3 new tautog pylons - This is a huge thing. I think one of then will produce tautog in Jan-March.

I caught 2 keeper tautogs at 16" and 19" out of 10, only one keeper puppy drum at 18", and a sheepshead at 14.5" (no size restriction). I caught many black sea bass, oyster toad fish, and 6 conger eels.
I used shrimp only as bait as usual.

Catching conger eel is a pain, but actually catching conger eel when the water temp is at around 60 F is good thing for the cold water fishing in winter. In the past for several years, the pylons I caught conger eel, produced the tautog when the water temp was 43-48 F in January - March. This is my stat, I rely on. I feel conger eel and tautog share the same underwater structures, except, conger eel don't bite when the water temp is below 55 F.

I think next week will be better in tautog fishing at CBBT. Also, specks will be in Rudee in full force. So, regardless the wind condition, we will have fun catching in VA Beach area..
