  • Flounder Speck & Puppy Drum, Apr 7,2023, Rudee, VA

When the temperature drops by 30 degrees, fishing won't be good.
Because it was the only day I could fish for 4 weeks, I fished on a cold, windy and wet day in Rudee, VA .
Somehow it turned out to be OK. I landed 2 keeper flounders - totally unexpectedly. I caught 5 specks @17-21".
I also caught my first puppy drum of 2023.

Congrats on the flounder on the mirrolure! I feel like you’d head so much luck on the lure over the years and I still never catch anything on them!

I have caught flounders on plastic lures with lips, Stretch25 (deep diver) and shallow divers (3-5'). All accidently, but several, when targeting stripers and bluefish.
I may try plastic lures in the shallow water for flounder someday.

That's crazy that you got those flounder like that. I was at Rudee on the 14th and it was pretty slow--most of the locals said the big drum from the previous week cleared out. I trolled all the way up to the houses looking for drum and eventually picked up a trout in the upper teens back toward the ramp. That and a trout another kayaker got were the only fish I saw all day. Stopped off at Little Creek to troll Pretty Lake and got a rat red later in the day.

        What net do you use?

A Net from Walmart under $12. I broke net handles or necks of the nets often when fishing the Bridge columns. Also when turtled while launching or beaching when the waves were high. So I use cheap nets. I stop using rubber net because 3 treble hooks on MirrOlure tore down the rubber net when good size fish head-shook.

I heard Specks haven't been in full force this year.
