  • Rudee inlet 5/3/2025

Late report now that the site is back up.

My friend and I launched at rudee inlet at sunrise on 5/3/2025 during low tide. It was windy that day with winds out of the SW and there were a lot of kayakers out. The wind was only manageable for those with pedal kayaks.

The fishing was slow initially but once the tide started coming in there were bluefish everywhere. My buddy and I both had better luck trolling than casting and they hit pretty much everything. I think they preferred hard body baits over paddle tails or spoons though.

Around noon, I got tired of bluefish and tried casting along grassy shorelines for drum and managed to catch one 24” red on a 3” paddle tail. I caught one more small one on the same lure and also some smaller drum on shrimp/blue crab. No trout today.

For my first trip down to VA beach it wasn’t bad, but will likely try to explore other areas next time. I didn’t realize Rudee would be so small.

The site wasn't up quite for a while. I couldn't post or see the posts.
I was wondering about bluefish in MD and DE in May.

According to the Rudee fishermen, Bluefish passed Rudee this spring. I am glad you met them in OC.

I plan to go to OCMD and DE in a couple of weeks to see if bluefish are still around. I may try for flounder at the inlet if I bring my kayak.

Joe, thanks for calling about the site. Grilled was able to get it back up but I fear the end is near.

Regarding blues, I was hoping to find them in OC over the weekend but the wind churned up the water inshore and made it tough to get out to the inlet where the boats had been catching. I missed my one good tide window to get out there Sunday morning but probably for the best bc the wind was really kicking.

Minh, any size to the blues down in Rudee?
        Used to fish more.

It’ll be sad to see the end of the site if it does go. A lot of history here, but I plan to post more until it does end like I used to back when I was in high school lol. A lot has changed since then and the forum isn’t like what I remember.

          Michael,

My buddy and I didn’t catch and really big ones. If I had to guess the biggest might have been around 20”. Posting a picture of what we kept as a group and I don’t think they got much bigger than the ones I have in the picture. The redfish was 24” with the tail pinched for reference.

The size I saw being caught around Rudee was for the most part pretty typical for a majority of I saw last year fishing in OC and Rehoboth.
