  • Friday the 13th......A Day of Firsts, a lost combo and a hard lesson learned

    Friday the 13th.....

First time targeting spades and sheepsheads.....
First time using my Elite 5 DSI at the CBBT complex......
First time I get thrown from my kayak!!
Lost a $400 combo I had just purchased not too long ago....

A little disheartened and pissed to say the least!! But I can't wait to get back out there and try it again.

    Enjoy the full story here.....

It’s too bad you got turtled. I feel your pain. Was it the first time?
I can’t believe you didn’t leash your rod. After catching many turtles, I leash everything. I keep a half of lures and baits under the center hatch (or on the deck) and the other half in a bag or a cooler so that I will have at least a half of the bait and lures after getting turtled. My bag and cooler are leashed. And I put home made locks for all my plastic coolers so that I would keep precious baits (shrimp or blue crab) in the cooler when turtled. My fiddler crab container is also leashed. Sometimes, the leashes are pain in butt, but they worth the trouble to me. The worst thing after getting turtled was that I couldn’t fish at all once. I only had circle hooks, sinkers and bait (clam and soft shell crab) that day for black drum fishing. The cooler lid popped open and I lost all my bait. All the planning and efforts were nullified 3+ miles off the shore. I had to come back
I hope your FF is OK. All my inexpensive, submerged FF showed the symptoms in few weeks. Nowadays, I will turn off the all electronics immediately after reentry, and will not turn them on for a few days.
    Hope you feel better now.

Sorry for your loss, but it was good to see that you could get back in quickly in those conditions. Some days it pays to push through all the warning signs, but some days, it pays to listen to them. Unfortunately, only hindsight can tell the two apart.

That sounds like a truly rough day on the water! I always tell people it's not if, but when! The turtle has yet to visit me on my kayak, but I have had several close calls and I know one day it will happen. I lost an iPhone 4s in a lifeproof case at Jbay this year to a big bluefish... that really sucked.

Look on the bright side, at least the water was warm and you were able to get back in quickly. Plus it sounds like people were around should it have been worse.

Funny you should mention that - I already reached out to them and am working on a custom rod from them to see what they can offer
