  • Pohick/Accotink/Gunston launch question

    Hi All,

Does anyone know if the general public is allowed to launch at this parking lot or if its reserved for the military.

    https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=3...p=0&sz=19&z=19

    Thanks!

I would love to find out too! There's a spot on rte 1 that you can get a kayak in but I never tried because I was unsure if I could legally continue through the base. If you can launch there I would assume the accotink would okay anywhere on base.

That spot is on Ft. Belvoir, so reserved for those with military ID and their guests. It's an awesome place to launch because you dont have to cross the water to get into Accotink, but I'm sure that's why you're interested in it.

If you live within the Northern Virginia area membership in The Occoquan Water Trail gets you an annual launch pass to all Northern Virginia Regional Parks: http://www.nvrpa.org/park/main_site/content/NVRPA_Parks

Occoquan Water trail launch sites: http://owlva.org/cms/water-trail/launch-sites

          Membership: http://owlva.org/cms/league-info/membership

The pass includes Algonkian for cartop boats: http://www.nvrpa.org/park/algonkian/content/boating

BTW, Riverbend is a Fairfax County park and is not included. However, they have a seasonal pass as well available at the park.

Hmm. So for $40/year I can launch my kayak for free at all those parks, Fountainhead, Pohick etc?

This line is a little confusing "Reduced entry and launch fees at all water trail access sites"

Yes, if you live in Fairfax county, a little more expensive if you leave outside.
