  • Pohick 5/20

Hooked up with Lordofthemanor (Bruce) for a couple hours at Pohick this morning. A bit slow or, I/we didn't figure the correct lure de jour. We both managed 3 or 4 nice LM. I landed 2 @16", 1 @ 15" and 1 @ 13". All fat and heavy for their length. Couple other swings and misses. Also "caught" a big a$$ Potomac Pike. About 30". Had him beat and next to the kayak for several minutes. Called over to Bruce but he was a ways away. Biggest one I've ever hooked. Slimy, smelly critters. Was trying to figure out what to do with it (no net, no fish grip) when he twisted one more time and got off. Good! He woulda been a problem in the kayak! Although, I did want to get a pic.

    Some pics of the LM:

Saw a lot of pike today including a couple bigun's spawning. That was interesting. They make a very distinctive sound when they gulp air. I was able to watch for several minutes. They looked like dinosaurs with their fins extended above the surface during the dance. BIG splash at "the moment"!

Nice. I will definitely hit Pohick next when I have a chance. I caught one on Wednesday and one spit the hook back at me. It was around 7-8 lbs. I usually use a bat to stun them then drag them in the kayak and cut the gills. Every time I did that, it looks like I just commit a murder on my kayak, blood and slime everywhere. They are magnificent especially the big one, if you stun them you have more time looking at them, they are really pretty. Recently, I decided that I'm not going to keep the baby one and one that is like 9 month pregnant. As much as I like the roe, I rather have more snakehead to fish next year.

        30" is a big snakehead!

Snakehead Hunter, Do they not have the "exterminate all snakeheads from the face of the earth" laws in Virginia? In MD it is a major offense to let one of them go alive.

Nice job on the fat bass! I'll probably be at Pohick on Saturday.

Is it really "a major offense"? The only major offense is transporting them alive to other bodies of water. Letting them go to catch another day? That's sportsmanship. Killing them and tossing them back into the water is such a waste!!!!
              Used to fish more.

Regardless of the law even though I still kept the one I caught I doubt that at this point it would make a difference if we killed or released the snakeheads we caught. I think they are here to stay

Virginia is for lover. It is not required for you to kill snakehead unless you want to keep it. Even if the law say so, I can not help it if the fish slip out of my hand, it is a powerful fish and it is slimy, opps lol.
