  • Rainy day at pohick

Caught about 10 nice bass...2 snakehead...one of which got away with my fish grips in its mouth. Top water frog slammed, great fight, at the yak, fish grips on, and as I started to pull him out of the water he pulled the infamous snakehead explosion...WHAM! slimy snakehead tail to the face..one two punch and I was down...glasses flew off my face and mr snakehead flipped in the water swimming away with fish grips in his mouth.. Then it poured.. Lost all my frogs missed twice as many bass and a few snakeheads but I would totally do it again.

I've caught 20+ snakeheads and nothing beats a good ole chatterbait with a fluke trailer IMHO. Oh yeah and nothing beats some top water action to get the heart going. Should be a warning label on there somewhere.

Chatterbaits senkos hollow body frogs and minus 1s...summertime lower potomac...gotta love it

Nice. I wish I can go this morning. I love when snakehead strike, I have a very hard time waiting that couple second before setting the hook. They just strike so hard that make you want to set the hook right away lol.

Awesome Justin! Will have to get together in July for those! BTW, we both live in Herndon I'm surprised we didn't meet earlier!

Agreed. The only other bait to consider would be a topwater rage toad type lure. If you bring a selection of these, you can have all the fun you want with largemouth bass and an occasional snakehead.

After our last snakehead trip where two snakeheads clobbered my son and I, we now have a "snakehead stick" Our strategy from here forward will be to get them in the net, then whack them in the head repeatedly....after that, cut the spinal cord behind the head with a fillet knife.

Good times with some great fish down there.

I've done the gill cutting thing and it still doesn't kill them quickly. It's happened to me and at least 4 other guys I know that have had snakeheads escape from the kayak even after cutting the gills and having a bloodbath all over the kayak.

Clobbering them in the head and then cutting down to the spinal cord behind the head is how I'm rolling.

Getting the snakehead is only half the fun. Killing them and getting them on a stringer or in a cooler without an escape is the hardest part.

I'll have to post a photo of our snakehead stick, made from a push broom handle with a bicycle grip on one end.

I think snakeheads are inmortals. I once tried to kill one by cutting from the top of the head around to the bottom on both sides of the head, cut so deep I felt the spinal cord on the sucker. After that I dropped in the water accidentally and when I went to pick it up the SOB swan away. Next time I'm bringing a gun.

From a washington post article published back in April:

"Snakeheads are survivors. One fish netted by Odenkirk's team seems to be thriving even after having its gills cut earlier by an angler."

I totally believe that, I had one last 4 hours even after cutting the throat and gills out.

This is how I roll. I reel them close. I hit them twice on the head with my angler aluminum club. I pull them on the kayak. I cut their gills. I toss them in the cooler. It works every time, never lose one. Btw, I use a glove to handle them, it's a lot easier with all that slime.

Also, we have quite some member living on VA side. We should get together and fish some snakehead, bass, perch, crappie. I'm always up for some Occoquan, Pohick bay, or Leesylvania if I'm free.

Nope...Free.... Already had an old broom stick and then pulled the bicycle handle off of an old/broken scooter. Tied on a length of cord and threaded a chunk of pool noodle to help me not lose the thing.
