I was on the water 0800 hrs heading for the 1st island, and armed with clams and fiddlers, my target was sheepshead.
So, where were they? All I got was croaker after croaker after croaker. Surprisely, no toads.
Check this. I dropped a tandem rig, one hook was baited with fiddler and the other hook was unbaited. I caught at least half dozen croakers on the unbaited hook. Huh?
All afternoon I was singing to myself:
"Croaker, croaker, how are you?
Don't bite by bait cuz I don't want you
Croaker, croaker, how are you?
I really want sheepie and don't want you"
Highlight of the day was catching a 12" black sea bass because you don't usually catch this size around there from a yak. You get keepers from deeper water. All fish released.
I talked to five other yakers. Only one person caught a sheepie, a 12 incher he released because he didn't know there's no size limit.
Also, I did only some jigging for flounder, much less than an hour of jigging. Got only croaker.
All in all, it was certainly a very nice day to yak fish.
