    CBBT 10-19-13, Sat

Met Comeonfish and KenY at the launch, and KenY and I were first on the water before 8 am. Comeonfish and HokieDJ later joined us on the water. Slack tide was about noon, so we caught incoming water that was fairly strong. The ride was somewhat wet too. Too bad the water was bad because it was KenY's first yak trip to CBBT, and it was a struggling effort with a paddle yak.

I jigged the shallows with nothing to show. I headed out to the first island, later to be joined by Comeonfish/Joe and HokieDJ/Dave. Nearly all of my time was searching for togs/sheeps with shrimp, blue crab and green crab, so I did very little jigging. Joe and I fished up to the 1st island. We also fished around the island along the rocks. I think it was eat-rig day for us.

Seemed like the fish weren't around. I had very few marks on my FF. Anyway, I caught sea bass, toads and a short tog. Joe also caught sea bass and toads, but he was king fisherman of the day. He caught an eel and a 20.5" tog. No sure what Dave caught.

Turned out a pretty good day with only sprinkles. It was cloudy, and of course the current gave us a workout. Winds were moderate to low. Was on the water 11 hours.

Wow, that's a really nice Tog Joe caught. I plan to head down there again one of the next two weekends weather permitting.
    Thanks for the report!

It was good meeting you guys out there. I am sorry that I chickened out so early. The wind, waves, and current was way too much for me to handle to try and fish the pilings and not become one with the pilings. I will be back at the CBBT soon.

      Nice Tog.

I ran over to Lynnhaven.....nothing going on over there.....just Pinfish and throwback flounders.

I'm glad I did not try the cbbt yesterday. I hope to try on a calmer day in the future. That definitely seems like it would have been quite the paddle to the 1st island in those conditions. I ended up at the hrbt fri night & sat morning. Tried rudee today. I'll be at ft. monroe this evening.

Nice tog. I hope to catch one of those someday.

It was a 21 incher. I was glad that I finally caught a descent one on a new rod and reel.

            KenY,
It was too rough and the current was too strong. You made the right call.
CHSP is definitely better place - I meant kayak friendly when wind is strong, over 12mph

That incoming tide was ripping. Made jigging impossible. When it did die down, there was nothing to be had. Once it started to slack enough, I worked an area for a good hour and got a bite and something big that keep getting off. I was excited because it felt like a big tog. After a good 30 mins or so, I decided to switch to a 2/0 setup and after a few tries I finally got him. On the way up, it didn't feel like a tog anymore so I was hoping it a sheepie.

                Instead I got him...

He was an eyeballed 36" against the measuring marks on my paddle.

Does that count towards the leader board?

Sure looks at least 36". Post it on Matt's thread. Did you get the eel on blue crab?

Yeah, that current, especially during the morning, was tough. I was very tired at the end of the day.

21" is very nice! Well done ComeOnFish!!

I desperately wanted a keeper myself this past weekend for some tog chowder but couldn't get one over 15.9999999" working the OC inlet. Did see some nice fish come up around me though.

                      Dave,
That was a big eel. I didn't know eel can grow that big. I caught two 2.5' eels back to back. I thought they were big.

                        Slobber Bob,
I think the bad weather (4-5 days of raining and strong wind) a week ago did something to fish. I think the normality will be restored this weekend. I hope the water temp drops by a degree or more

Did you guys keep any of the eels? They are quite good smoked or fried, they just leave a coating of slime over anything the touch...

For a moment I thought about Unagi rolls but then those are fresh water kind. I'm not sure how salt tasted since I don't know what they eat but he loved my blue crabs. Besides, it was big. 36" was a conservative eyeball. So I evicted him from the hole and let him go a couple pilings down.

I fished Kipto Saturday morning. Not much going on there. Winds were from the North so both sides of the ships were pretty rough. Not even the toad fish wanted to come out and play. Caught a few sea bass and that was it.

Saturday night, fished HRBT. Didn't see any striper but grey trout were everywhere. They were all tiny 8-12inches. Got tired of catching small trout so I headed down to the Island. I fished around it dragging a 2oz jighead with gulp curly tails and caught a few puppy drum, 24inches was the biggest. It was a little windy but not too bad when I got out there. Needless to say, all hell broke out after midnight..lol I've been out to HRBT in pretty bad conditions but this was just insane. It got to the point where I took the leash from my paddle and leashed the kayak to myself cause I seriously tought i was gonna flip. It was a bumpy and wet ride back to the launch.

Lesson1: Always check weather if you are planning on fishing throughout the night

                              Lesson2: Don't go out in 30mph winds!

I wanted to fish CBBT Sunday but winds were just ridonkulous. I had been keeping an eye on the winds all throughout the week and what was suppose to be a good weekend was the complete opposite...weather man wrong again!
