  • CBBT Togging on Apr 12, 2014 (3 keepers out of 8)

I made the first and the last tautog fishing trip to CBBT (Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel) in the Spring in this year. I decided to hit CBBT over Cape Henlopen (DE) because of the water temp. A NOAA buoy stated that 45F in the Cape Henlopen area. 45F water is too cold for togs I thought. The 54F water (stated by a NOAA Buoy) at CBBT was very promising. I thought togs are in the area where kayakers could reach.
I bought a dozen of green crab and 3 dozens of fiddler crab at Ocean East2. Both worked equally well.

The weather was perfect in the morning. Somehow I was the only one fishing until 1 PM between the beach and the first Island. I think boaters went other places.

Every time I picked a bridge column, I kept repeating to myself, "Togs are waiting for me"

Later, the wind picked up and the current became very strong. I gave up fishing more. It was impossible to fish close to bridge columns.
Caught 8 togs. Three of them were keepers at 17.5", 18", and 18.5".

    The fishing log:

Looks like you had a successful trip. I want to get out for some bay fish, but I gotta get used to the new boat first.

I went there this friday. The temperature was hopping back and forth from 45 - 49. This week is supposed to be a little cooler so not sure how much it will warm up. Hopefully it will.

The best time spent is time that doesn't feel like it was spent at all. When it's worth it you'll give everything to do it all over again no matter what the cost.

              Good job on the togs.

I saw info that says DE coastal temp will warm up this week, so CHSP might be good for tog.

                Tufnik,
CHSP - Still Questionable. CBBT will be good this weekend.

Depending on how badly the rain and cooler temps impact the water temps, I should be trying CHSP this Thursday or Friday. I'll post a report (or nonreport). Water temp was reading in the low 50's yesterday and is in the high 40's now.

Generally, Kipto water temp is warmer than CBBT. I think Joe's right; many tog yakers may be out at Kipto. I may tog this Sat, but can't decide on CBBT or CHSP. VA tog season closes in two weeks.
