I fish from shore during out going tide from 6:30-8:30 pm. I caught over 15 shads, I lost count. The action was fast and furious near sunset. I miss quite a few because I was pretty bad at setting hook, and a few leap out of the water and spitted back the hook. A couple of guys fished from a canoe told me they caught a bunch as well.

Favorite lures:
1. Rage toad: it makes big commotion with its leg and attract both SH/Bass, but after 3-4 bites you have to replace it.
2. Live target frog (green): very durable, my frog must have at least 20 kills on it and still working, I just need to sharpen the hook occasionally.
But I think anything will work. SH is very lazy, you just have to throw it close to it without spooking it.
I usually like small SH around couple pounds is perfect for Vietnamese cooking. I usually keep anything up to 10 lbs, I let the bigger fish go.

I agree w SH hunter medium size are best for eating like up to 22 inches and SH are not menace as we know it, their growth rate is faster than any species on freshwater, thats why it safer to eat coz they wouldn t accumulate alot of PCB , best is topwater frog, its just made them furious.

I had the luxury of working on the Occoquan Dam area for better than a year. removed the hydro-electric generators, installed control tower and raw water piping. Installed the GOX system you see bubbling in the reservoir. Any way, most mornings and lunch we would fish within the Fairfax Water gates. It is homeland security access only so fishing was great. Rockfish, bass and snake heads were everywhere. Betweeen concrete pours we would fish the lower side of the upper dam and catch huge catfish. Lots of fun. Currently working Boling AFB on Potomac.
