  • Chincoteague Island

Heading down to Chincoteague Island Wed-Sun, for my first saltwater fishing trip. We'll be staying inshore, fishing on the west side of the wildlife refuge. Is anyone familiar with that area or have a tips for good fishing around the island?

We spent Friday and Saturday fishing from Tom's Cove up to the Wildlife Refuge bridge. The wife and I each got a flounder but both were around 14". We spent most of the time taking Croakers off our hooks. It seemed like every cast we caught one or even two. We used soft plastics and squid, as soon as it hit the water the Croakers were on it. Anyone heading down there I recommend staying at Snug Harbor Marina. Super friendly people and the location is perfect.

It was pretty windy when we were down there so out on the water, even paddling through the marshes, we didn't have any problems with mosquitos or flies. We spent a day riding our bikes out to the Hike/Bike Beach Section the Chincoteague W.L. Refuge and there were some Flies out there. I got a few mosquito bites at night while sitting on the dock enjoying a tasty beverage after long days of paddling but there weren't swarms of mosquitos and flies. I kept bug spray with me the whole time but never had to use it in the areas we visited.

We just got back to NOVA so we won't be down there. Good luck with the fishing on the Bay, hopefully the Croakers won't be as bad over there. A little fore warning, if you are coming back on Sunday afternoon the traffic can be horrible! 50 was backed up from Queenstown all the way down to Easton, took us an extra hour and a half to get home and there weren't any wrecks or anything, just tons of people heading back north.

We will fishing chincoteague all next week except for swim day. Plan to be using the skiff during the day and switching to the tandem for the evening tide. Was down a week ago and was able to get multiple small flounder during slack tide but croaker were aggressive. Managed one 22" from the skiff and had to go home. Blitzed it a 3am, Sunday morning, moved furniture into the house, moved furniture out of the house, loaded the skiff and fished 3 hours and turned around and went home with the boat. This weekend was wife's birthday so she wanted to go to Point Lookout with the skiff and dogs. Plenty go big croaker and small blues in Cornfield Harbour. Would have been nice to have a yak but no room. Will post about adventures while away next week.

How's the Park down there at Point Lookout? My wife and I have thought about a camping weekend down there since it is only 2 hours away and is fairly accessible in a timely manner on a Friday afternoon with D.C. traffic.

The park is great. Very well maintained. Lots of stuff to see and do. Only have 30 amp service in the larger sites but with all the trees and shade doesn't prove a problem. Certain loops are dog friendly. Cabins do not allow pets. Many launch points for boats and kayaks. Take groceries as the closest grocery store is Lexington Park.
