Mobjack Bay rockfish

Spent an overcast Sunday fishing for reds in Mobjack Bay, VA. No luck on the reds but did manage to snag a 28" rockfish on a popping cork in the shallows.

Hey man, I saw you at Lynnhaven on Saturday and we helped each other carry our yaks down to the water. Do any good over in there? Oh, and nice striper. Was actually just talking to a friend about trying Mobjack soon.

Nice catch! What bait did you catch him on? The puppy drum action seems little slower in the Mobjack this year compared to this time last year and compared to areas like the Poquoson Flats this year. Maybe the late summer / fall bite will be the ticket in that area. I'm hoping anyways.

Hey, thanks again for the hand with the yak! :-) Didn't do that well at Lynnhaven. No reds and only a handful of flounder. It was my first time there and I'll definitely be back though as it's great looking water.

Nice catch! What bait did you catch him on?

Thanks! He was landed in super shallow water off of a point at the back of a creek. He fell for a pink Berkley gulp grub (1/4 oz jig head) on a popping cork.

I spoke to a crabber on Mobjack and he relayed that redfish were there "by the thousands" the previous two years, however this year they were few and far between. Would love to hear more about Poquoson flats redfish :-)

Yeah, no problem. Good to see you out there. I only got into dink flouder, small blue, and a small speck that day but got into some pups on Sunday back in there. I really enjoy Lynnhaven...like the area so much I am most likely buying a house down around there in the near future.

Hope you got some help with your slayer over at Mobjack. Very nice kayak, but man that thing is a beast. Helped me make up my mind that I am not going to be able to put one of those on my list of possible pedal drive yaks I might get in the future. It is just too heavy for me to be dragging around all the time with my back the way it is.

To fish Poquoson / Drum Island Flats, launch at the public ramp on Messick Road at Back River:

Out to the mouth of the river and turn left. Along the whole shoreline of Plum Tree Island and extending outward 2 to 3 nautical miles are the flats. You can have good luck inside Back River as well. Chart 12238 covers the area:

Where you see the Danger Zone on the chart, (or really anywhere along Plumtree Island just to be safe) You aren't allowed on land or to use anchors. The island used to be a bombing range and there could be un-exploded bombs.
