  • Fly-rod kayak transport

I have recently discovered this niche of kayak fly fishermen on this forum, and am happy I did. I just got my first fishing dedicated kayak and am looking forward to the fishing season kicking into high gear. I have been fly fishing for about a year now and have finally gotten the hang of making medium distance, quality casts. I especially look forward to catching some WP on my 5wt flyrod from my kayak. As I was thinking about this, I began to wonder where to put my rod while paddling, due to the reel placement it will not fit in a regular rod holder. I suppose I could take off the reel, rest it in my milk crate and put the rod in one of the vertical holders attached to my milk crate, but that seems rather counterintuitive to being able to quickly grab a rod if you spot a fish. How do you guys carry your flyrods onboard kayaks?

Upon second thought, I could buy a cheap plastic rod holder and with minimal effort and a dremel, make a rod holder to ziptie to my milk crate. But I am still open to hear other ideas. Thanks!

Scotty makes a fly rod holder attachment. I bought one last year and will give it a try in 2019.
I usually just have my fly rod between my legs and pointing straight forward when paddling.

I’ll look at the Scotty holder, thanks. I am a little wary about leaving rods laying about while paddling after breaking my UL last year dealing with some googan in his 65 princess churning out a massive wake. Thanks

Ram makes a decent one too, but you can definitely make a pvc slotted holder with a drill / dremel fairly easy to put behind you.
        Used to fish more.

          Carson,

I've used Scotty flyrod holders for years. I attached them to my milkcrate via Scotty base mounts using the side opening on the mount to lock down the holder.

I usually carry two fly rods on outings.

          See here:

The above is my Native Ultimate.

I do the same thing in my Revo but I attached the Scotty mounts to a BlackPak for that boat:

I started with a homemade version of flyrod holders where they were stored vertically behind my seat. I didn't like that because 9 foot rods often hit overhanging branches when I worked shorelines. Being able to lay them back with the adjustable positioning of the Scotty holders has been good.

White perch on the fly are lots of fun. I'll be leading a trip in the Severn for the Free State Fly Fishers in June (date to be determined) specifically for white perch. Stay tuned and join us if you can.
