Hit the pond this morning. I've never had much luck there. Started out that way...not much luck. Switched to what I consider a cheater "fly" from the wooly bugger I had tied....it's a creme brand white twister tail...about an inch long, no weight...on a 3wt rod...picked up 5 small LMB...decent morning after all.

      clm,

Some folks in the FSFF call your twister tail creation "the fly alternative."

Glad to hear it worked for you.

Thanks....I started looking for other colors in that size, but no luck. Lots of the crappie tubes, but no dark swim tails...weird...guess I just keep tying dark Marabou.

You can buy curly tails made specifically for flies:

Yikes! $3 a pop for something that may get bitten off on the first hit. Are all fly tying materials so pricey. I realize there is a certain zen associated with tying, but I was never blessed with he patience.

Btw, not a critique of those who tie their own, more of a statement on my ignorance concerning the materials that go into it.

Check again. That's $3 for 10 or 30 cents each.

Some tying materials are indeed very pricey...special capes and hackles for dry flies can cost a hundred dollars or more. But they'll create a lot of flies.

A single $5.95 bucktail can produce Clousers to point where they cost pennies each. The same for marabou, saddle hackle, and chenille for wooly buggers. My foam poppers cost under a dollar. A Gaines Bass King popper is $4.00.

I'd much rather lose the flies I tie than an X-Rap or even Rat-L-Trap.

I generally shop on eBay...a little patience and searching will result in some deals...huge Hanks of bucktail...I also cut regular plastic worms, or the zman ones into strips...works well, and when they do get bit off, not so much of a loss...I used some tiny gulp minnow yesterday as well...little split tails in silver under black...crappie, brrma and bass crushed them ...fresh water fish aren't that picky, as long as you can give it some life. I like tying my own, but I LOVE catching, so I go with what works. I've been trying different lengths and weights of leader/tippet too...lots of trial and error. Always learning. Keeps me entertained and outside. Great hobby that can be as expensive or as frugal as you wanna make it.
