Spent a few hours paddling around...caught a bunch of eager bluegill on the popper...quite a few small bass on light spinning gear. Was told by local out there that the lake was drained a few years back and there were quite a few articles on high mercury....quiet and pretty, even on the hottest of days. Bluegill were willing and aggressive...if I had switched to something else I wouldn't have been able to keep a line in the water...the popper kept the smaller guys at Bay....but they sure kept slamming at it anyway.IMG_20190717_094629.jpg

A bluegill is probably the first fish on the fly that most fly anglers catch. We move on to other species but we keep coming back to bluegills because they're so much fun.Mark

If bluegills got up to bass size they would be impossible to land...they fight way, way above their weight class! Great little gamefish...black rubber spider with white rubber legs is a killer fly for them..."Lady Luck" 2016 Red Hibiscus Hobie Outback, Lowrance Hook2-7TS

There's a Facebook page devoted to bluegill flies called "The Bluegill Bug Tyers" where folks share their bluegill fly patterns.
Many of the flies highlighted are incredibly intricate.
The simple black foam spider works just fine. Plus it's easy to tie. It's a standard for me. But folks on the above page have taken creativity to a new level. And bluegills must be appreciative because there are plenty photos with "works of art" attached to their lips.Mark
