  • Still Skunked on the Fly Rod in 2020

Yesterday, I put on the waders, grabbed the fly rod, and hiked about a mile through the woods from my home to fish this flow.
I saw zero fish, zero crayfish, no insects, and bumped into a hissing Canadian goose who was nesting in the middle of the river on a fallen tree.
    I encountered no other fishermen.
I did happen upon a family of 3 from my neighborhood on the trail as I was hiking back home.
I am reminded why I dislike fishing here.
The next time I go fishing I will drive a short distance to fish a different flow.

    Tom,

I hadn't been out much this year but I had kept my 2019 monthly string of catching local fish in my kayak going for the first three months of 2020. And on the fly I've caught a fair number of pickerel foremost, a couple of largemouth bass and one bluegill through March. My last fish was a St. Mary's lake pickerel on the fly in March. Looks my monthly streak is in jeopardy since I have not been out in April and likely will not get out this month now.

Yes, I am fortunate to be able to fish the Patuxent from my house. Hike about a mile through the woods and have access in areas that are not heavily fished. Would be nice to actually see some fish and catch a couple. Wading and fly fishing can be very difficult in the areas near my home. I don't see how fish survive there. I do not see lots of minnows, crayfish, or bugs in the river. Other river systems seem more full of life in my opinion.
