  • Tying materials

Where are you guys buying materials from? Are you mail ordering or going to a store?
Bass pro doesn’t have much of a selection.

Tochterman's in Baltimore has an excellent selection of fly tying materials. I last visited just just before our COVID lockdown and was able to stock up well with the items I was looking for. In some cases, like bucktails, I like to see the items before I purchase them because I'm looking for certain textures. You can do that there. The second floor of their establishment is like a candy store for fly anglers. You could call or email to see if they have what you want. Their customer service is very good.

For online ordering, I like J. Stockard: https://www.jsflyfishing.com/

Again, well stocked and fast shipping. I use them for standard items like hooks, threads and chenille.

Some items, like foam for gurglers is available in local craft stores.

      Ditto Tochterman's.

I've been there very recently, just after New Year's, and it is a world class fly fishing shop in the upstairs.
      Wonderful folks to deal with.
      A Baltimore treasure!

About 50% of my bignose spinner jig skirt materials, blades and hardware have come thru them.

Also J. Stockard as Mark mentions, plus Janns and Barlows, although both of those two are a bit more limited in their fly tying materials.

        Stu,

Glad to hear that Tochterman's is still well stocked.

Post COVID vaccine, it's on my short list of local places I'm anxious to revisit.

I was in Tocherman’s a few weeks ago and they were actively restocking their well equipped store. Great shop and great people.

As for tying supplies, I would have said Tiefest is a good opportunity but I imagine that’s canceled this year. I am rusty but tied a couple dozen flies last year for trips to the Caribbean that were all cancelled bc of COVID.. I look forward to using them!
          Used to fish more.

No way I'm driving into Baltimore. So Tochterman's is never going to happen.
I will buy things from BassPro.
I have ordered some materials from J. Stockard's website.
I have also bought some feathers, fake fur, foam sheets, super glue, and yarn at Hobby Lobby.

I'm sorry but your attitude about Baltimore is misplaced.
              It's your loss.
Yeah, there are places in town that I'd rather not drive thru, but you can find there are ways to leave the relative safety of Howard County to get to Tochterman's that will not expose you to the seedy parts of town.
You may want to rethink this.

Last year's Tie Fest was held at the BWI Airport Marriott during the last week in February. Indeed, it has been cancelled this year. Together with fellow Free State Fly Fishers, I participated as a fly tyer at our club table. We chatted with attendees, gave away flies, provided information about the club, signed up a few new members and had a great time for two days. Little did we know it was one of the last times we would be able to meet together with our fellow anglers due to the coming pandemic.

The good news is that a Tie Fest in 2022 is being planned. It's a very nice event with vendors, guides and seminars by experts -- a great way to spend a winter's day.

Similarly, The Fly Fishing Show, a much larger gathering than Tie Fest and held at six locations around the U.S., was cancelled this year at both of its closest locations -- Lancaster, PA and Edison, NJ.

Denver, CO is going forth with its version of the show this May. I wish them well. But here on the east coast, the winter PA and NJ shows were cancelled. Both will next be held in 2022. NJ will be in January 2022, PA in March 2022.

The Fly Fishing Show is well worth the drive to Edison or Lancaster. Each location is an easy and enjoyable carpool trip with your friends. The show features famous tyers and fly anglers who provide seminars and casting demonstrations. Guides from all over the world offer talks, slide shows and videos about their locations. Vendors from every major fly rod, reel and line maker imaginable are present. Some offer special show pricing below normal retail. Any hook, feather, fur, thread or fly tying material made is available, as are vises and the tools needed to tie your own flies. It's a top notch production that became a winter ritual for thousands. I always came home with new gear and new knowledge. I really missed it this year.

                Here's a link about the show: https://flyfishingshow.com/

So, shows are also good places to get fly tying materials -- just not this year.

There is literally nowhere in baltimore that is unsafe to drive through in the middle of the day.Perhaps you can make that argument about the night time, but even then, it's a bit of a stretch. Also Tochterman's is in fells point, to get there from the highway you drive through the inner harbor and fells, both very gentrified neighborhoods, you'll be fine. I miss living there and having great stores like this so close by, but then again when I lived there I'd not tried fly fishing yet. I'm still a super novice but should go back again sometime soon with my " updated" knowledge.

                    Tochterman's is a Baltimore treasure.

If you'd like to learn more about it and its storied history, the CCA MD produced a Podcast from the store in June 2019.

The Podcast is a good listen.

The store is definitely worth a visit, not just for fly fishers, but for all anglers.
