  • Cicada Fly Pattern and Lesson

We've had discussion on this forum recently about the Brood X cicada hatch that will visit Maryland in May and June.

Tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. the Free State Fly Fishers will host a Zoom session where Joe Bruce will demonstrate his method of tying a cicada fly.

    You are welcome to attend.

Click here for the club website link announcing the session: http://fs-ff.com/index.php/event/03-06-21-fly-tying/

Tomorrow's Zoom link to the session is embedded in the above announcement about midway down the page in red text. Click on that link at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow to attend the event.

I hope you'll join us. I think you'll be surprised at the simplicity of Joe's pattern and how easy it is to tie.

    Thank you,

We had a good Zoom session this morning.

Here are a few photos I took from my laptop while Joe tied his cicada fly.

Again, a very easy fly to tie. Simple flies are often the best.

We also discussed how to fish them.

We had 22 folks in attendance.

A special thanks to those from this forum who tuned in.

          Tom,

I'm glad you could join us.

          Joe did a great job.

Zoom has been invaluable in keeping the club together during the pandemic.

            Tom,
Our club is always welcoming new members. Just $15.00/year. Give it a thought.

              John,

The best part for me about the tying sessions is not the fly we tie, but the conversation among members that takes place during the tying. Fishing methods, locations and good stories are freely exchanged. Zoom has been tremendous in allowing us to stay connected as a club. But it has limited that table-side banter somewhat. It will be great when we can gather in person again. I hope that is not too far into the future.

I have not seen a real cicada yet. But I caught my first fish of the year on a cicada fly yesterday at Centennial Lake.

                  It was a small bass:

I later caught another bass, same size, on the fly.

Bluegills kept buzzing around it but it was too big for them.

I caught a decent bass too:

It hit a regular foam popper:

I am just starting to hear the sounds of cicadas here in the Columbia area.
The hatch is in it's opening stages. I expect things will change in the next couple of weeks.

(I've also yet to get smacked in the face by one when riding my bike.)

I've shore fished a couple of small local Howard County ponds this week with surface poppers and the fish haven't quite gotten tuned on to them yet.

                      Stu,

I fished Trap Pond in DE yesterday.

I heard cicadas in the trees. They were loud. I was surprised because I thought the Eastern Shore was not a prime spot for Brood X.

Still no sign of them here in the Dena.
