  • Making Foam Fly Rod Poppers and a Big Thank You

    Two things:

First, some of you may have seen the excerpt from my new book, Fly by the Seat of Your Kayak about fly rod poppers on page 18 in the November issue of Rudow's FishTalk Magazine:

    https://www.fishtalkmag.com/

The excerpt is from Chapter Two in which I discuss the flies I use. Foam flies are my topwater choice. They're easy to make, durable and effective. I use them to catch everything from bluegills to stripers.

Next Saturday, 20 November at 10:00 a.m. I will be leading a two-hour seminar at the Free State Fly Fisher's clubhouse, 3789 Queen Anne Bridge Rd., Davidsonville, MD 21035 on how to make and fish foam poppers like these:

    Visitors are welcome.

Please PM me if you plan to attend, need directions or if you have any questions about the session.

Second, I want to thank those of you who have purchased my book and sent me kind words about it. Some have appreciated the fact that I related flyfishing to conventional tackle fishing throughout the book. Others have commented positively on my conversational writing style. And some said it will encourage them to try the long rod. I’m pleased because each of those outcomes were my intentions in writing it.

The book remains available on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Fly-Seat-Your...%2C1164&sr=8-1

Also, I recently received more copies for personal sales. Please PM me if you are interested in purchasing a copy. I will gladly sign the title page to you at your request or to another since we are entering the gift-giving season.

Stay safe everyone – on the water and off.

The next best thing to fishing is being around folks who enjoy fishing.

I enjoyed leading yesterday's popper making session at the Free State Fly Fisher's (FSFF) clubhouse in Davidsonville:

    Pop1.jpg

Fifteen or so participants left with two foam poppers each. The only bad thing is that they will have to wait until spring to give their new flies a true workout. Few tidal or pond fish other than a super hungry pickerel are going to rise to a popper now. But yesterday's participants will be ready to worry bass and bluegills with their poppers this coming spring.

The FSFF has various fly tyers conduct Saturday instructional sessions throughout the year. There's never a fee for participants.
