  • More February Tenkara Pond Fishing

I fished briefly on Saturday and Monday afternoons. Hit two different local ponds. Caught a bunch of purple bluegills, landed a hungry looking largemouth bass, and lost another largemouth bass. This is the earliest I've tried Tenkara pond fishing in Maryland and it's working just fine. All fish are shallow, 2-4 feet deep.

    Good for you, Tom.

I labored on 9 February, my last outing, to catch two chain picks at an Eastern Shore pond.

However others present were catching many crappies with small jigs under bobbers. One gentleman was casting small flies to catch them.

I carried only large streamers in hopes of an afternoon of nonstop pickerel action. The picks decided to fast that day. My offerings attracted little attention from my toothy targets.

On my next pond visit, I am adding a lighter rod and smaller flies to my arsenal. The panfish have already moved from deeper water to the shallows.

If the picks ignore me again, maybe the panfish won't!
