  • Patapsco Brown Trout

No boat yesterday, but fly fishing a little bead-head swallow tail nymph yielded this little brown trout.
Caught by casting into a riffle, about 3' deep, running fairly quickly. I cast slightly upstream and let the nymph drift. The brown got on and gave me a nice little fight.
This was my last fish caught as a single man. I got married about 5 hours later

    Time: 10:00AM.
    Coord: 39.310685 N -76.792481 W
Outside temp: Sunny, ~76 deg F
    Water clarity: slightly opaque

Rod: Sage Approach 5 wt. 9'
Line: Scientific Anglers Mastery GPX WF floating line.
    Leader: Orvis 3x 9'.

Congrats. I've been crushing them on bead headed hairs ears nymphs size 12 this year. Need to start trying up stuff for the bay now that its warmer.

Way upstream above the Park, there are a few Browns that have managed to go feral, and reproduce.
Not many, but they are there.
For the most part, the Browns that you catch in the Park are survivors of the Spring's stocking. Most years, the river gets too warm to hold trout over by mid summer.

Tongue in cheek, when I hear about "Patapsco River Brown Trout" it is usually in conjunction with a sewerage leak much further down river.

@ bignose, Ha! I hope these aren't the result of any kind of sewage activity. Jokes aside, would you feel comfortable eating a Patapsco trout that you kept?

@Pigpen, this brown (and the 4 other rainbows) that I caught this weekend was on a ~size 12 bead head nymph, so you're right on. This was some little swallowtail pattern I bought in Colorado 10 years ago and never used... I guess these trout don't discriminate...

I've tied up a bunch of wooly buggers with hopes to get them salty this coming weekend.

        Thanks for your replies, gents!

The stocked trout are quite edible.
They are stocked by the DNR to catch and keep.

Not so sure about critters like catfish caught down nearer to the Harbor.
