  • Cold weather bass and musky sightings

Haven't posted in awhile and just got back in the kayak last week. Just wanted to give a brief report. We have been having success using primarily suspending jerk baits this past week. No behemoths, but we're catching em

We've been working them sloooooow. I give it a solid jerk and wait 15 seconds to jerk again. All hits are coming on the pause. Hope this info helps some of you get on em.

Also wanted to report I'm getting closer to my first musky! I'm thinking in the next two weeks I'll have a successful musky report. Found three in one day last week with the biggest around 35". They were still very much awake and moving so I'm assuming they're still hungry. No takers yet but did have a couple follows (water was crystal clear, I think it makes them a little harder to fool).

Hope everyone has a Merry Christmas.

Thanks Zack. Husky Jerk looks like your lure there. Looking forward to a musky report and photo from you soon.

Yea the husky jerk has been my go to. I like it more and more every time I use it.

I am fishing the Potomac from Williamsport all the way down to Harper's Ferry. I have found them all throughout, there's more in there then people think. I think more and more of the true strains are successfully breeding.

I've been wanting to fish there. I thought there were mostly smallies there. You might want to try some swim baits for the muskies, I do pretty well on Pike with them. I'm going to try the husky jerk next time I go.pike.jpg

Good luck! If you keep after them you will get your musky. They are fairly active in the cold water, much more so than smallmouth bass.

It's been extremely tough and I've put well over 150 hours on the water at this point. But even seeing one is a reward at this point. I've got their attention with inline spinners, and jerk baits. Come early spring I'm going to try live bait.

I like these Rapala Tail Dancers in Yellow Perch for musky on the potomac in the cooler water periods:

Musky have vibration sensors in their heads. These tail dancers push water at a low frequency side to side even on a very slow retrieve. Those big walleyes up there will crush these baits too.

Huh no kidding. That's good to know. I've been throwing the bigger xraps and HJs. I'll have to pick a couple of the tail dancers up as well.

I have a buddy who does well with the super shad rap.

See the lure in the upper left hand corner, that one came from right around Williamsport.

As far as I know there are no yellow perch in that part of the potomac. I think it is just a highly visible presentation and they start tracking the "pulse" from the lure. Those big shad raps have a big side to side wobble as well.

Wow that's a niceun. That's about the size of the larger one I saw last week. Definitely going to grab some tailchasers.

Have you tried large swimbaits for them? The in-fisherman folks swear by them.

Which kind of swim baits do you mean? The hard bodied or the large soft plastic paddle tail style? I zoomed a large storm shad right past a coasting musky's nose and he paid it no mind what so ever lol

Paddle tails. Surprised they weren't interested.
