Finally some decent weather and the itch was too great so I launched at St Mary’s lake around 9:30. When I got there a gentleman was cursing at the gate kiosk as it wouldn’t accept his credit card. He backed up, let me through, and then he was stuck again. I walked back with my golden age pass and let him in. He watches me and goes, why’d you press in state before swiping. I told him so they’d know how much to charge. He was befuddled by this revelation.
Headed to the shallow upper end trolling a paddle tail with no bites. Switched to a Senko trying downed trees that looked like they had 4-5’ of water at the ends but no takers. Migrated out to the middle where I know the old creek channel runs (vaguely, I no longer use a FF) and that was the ticket. Second cast and I had my first pickerel of the day.
Next cast another pickerel. Lost the black Senko so just grabbed first one I found in blue. A few cast latter had a largemouth.
Caught 3 bass in total on the blue but the pickerel didn’t like it. Another kayaker saw me catch and came close to me. It’s a 350 acre lake and you need to be in my 1 acre of it. As usual the bite turned off after that (and I don’t think they did it). Headed in around 1230 with one more pickerel added.
By Friday the lake should be on fire, but expect a crowd. Even today I saw many boats. Felt great to be on the water.
