  • Back on water at St Mary’s

Finally some decent weather and the itch was too great so I launched at St Mary’s lake around 9:30. When I got there a gentleman was cursing at the gate kiosk as it wouldn’t accept his credit card. He backed up, let me through, and then he was stuck again. I walked back with my golden age pass and let him in. He watches me and goes, why’d you press in state before swiping. I told him so they’d know how much to charge. He was befuddled by this revelation.

Headed to the shallow upper end trolling a paddle tail with no bites. Switched to a Senko trying downed trees that looked like they had 4-5’ of water at the ends but no takers. Migrated out to the middle where I know the old creek channel runs (vaguely, I no longer use a FF) and that was the ticket. Second cast and I had my first pickerel of the day.

Next cast another pickerel. Lost the black Senko so just grabbed first one I found in blue. A few cast latter had a largemouth.

Caught 3 bass in total on the blue but the pickerel didn’t like it. Another kayaker saw me catch and came close to me. It’s a 350 acre lake and you need to be in my 1 acre of it. As usual the bite turned off after that (and I don’t think they did it). Headed in around 1230 with one more pickerel added.

By Friday the lake should be on fire, but expect a crowd. Even today I saw many boats. Felt great to be on the water.

Thanks for posting the info about the entry fee. I have to update myGolden Age Pass. Nice perks for us old farts! Hope to get there in a week or two.

      Mike,

Yes...Thanks for posting about the admission process. Toll takers and gatekeepers are being replaced everywhere. It's disconcerting for customers who prefer human interactions. It's especially bad for toll booth workers and gatehouse attendants. But it's our new world -- we push buttons or click a white arrow on a screen to get what we want.

What I want is to get down there again this year. It's a beautiful lake and so large compared to the Eastern Shore mill ponds. Great fishing too.

      Congrats on your catches.

Great report! I need to get some pickerel this year on my Tenkara rod.
I hate it when people crowd next to me when I'm fishing. It's especially unnecessary when kayak fishing.
