  • GoPro mounting--Hobie

Santa gave me a Gopro for Christmas and I had a few mounting questions. Right now I have a 1" ram ball in the mast hole, this was used for an older camera I was using, a Kodak Zx3 playsport. Had a few ram extension rods to get the camera closer to the bow of the kayak because the camera did not have a broad viewpoint. I ended up scrapping the mount because the ram ball was really shaky at the stem just below the ball...ended up making a mount out of electrical conduit.

I would like to use the previous mount for the GoPro, I think the camera is lighter than the Zx3 but I have a feeling it's still going to be shaky. So my possible solutions without diving into the wallet was:

    1. Use less of an extension ramrod to leviate the weight of the Gopro, but will I still get a nice point of view, not zoomed in too much.
    2. Purchase a 1.5" ram ball and conversion stem back to 1" to utilize the rest of my mount extensions.
    3. Scrap the ram ball and get a scotty mast mount which I could not find on the internet.

Or any other ideas would be appreciated...I am trying to get as much foot pedaling out of the video but I have a feeling it's inevitable.

    Thanks!!

I should show you my solution. I have an old lamp goose neck that gets the camera elevated. On the camera end I just fashioned a mount. On the other end I wrapped it in rubber so it fits snuggly in the mast holder. With this flexible neck I can position the camera lots of different ways.

The gopro has a super-wide angle lens. You shouldn't have to move it to far away from you. My front gopro is mounted to a piece of pvc tubing placed in the mast hole and secured with a length of bungee cord to the little knob that secured the mast into the hole. use tubing long enough to lift the camera higher than the pedals. The rear gopro is mounted to a mono pod then to a scotty mount.

Funny. I've been researching the same topic. It would seem our Santa's think alike. Check out Rob Choi's rigging tips.

Yakattack.com should have a post like you're looking for.

I'm also looking at this option which is another low cost DIY solution.
