  • DIY Waterproof Lithium Battery Box

The battery box that I made to run my hummingbird helix 5 CHIRP SI GPS G2 is working far better than I expected. I made this box out of 2 Blue brick batteries that I ordered from eBay and a waterproof parts storage box that I got from the Home Depot. Also I used and assortment I wire connectors a few pieces of wire in a small Digital voltmeter. During the winter I tested it inside and it ran continuously for about 13 hours. Since then I have fished back-to-back days for over six hours each with very little voltage drop. And just put three trips totaling over 14 hours over a week span without a charge and I was still reading 11.2 V. It only weighs slightly over 3 pounds and cost about $80 to make.

Lithium batteries have very little to no voltage drop until they are almost depleted. Many digital volt meters read Lithium batteries voltage incorrectly but in any case at 11.2v your batteries would be at the point of depletion and very close to the minimum voltage for most FF. Not knocking your build, personally I don't recommend using Lithium-ion Polymer batteries due to their more volatile nature vs the more stable Lifepo4.
