Anyone have any experience repairing trolling motors? Mine was working fine and just stopped.

I have an Minn Kota Endure 40 that is hardly used. Power and connection to the switch meter fine for voltage. Power to the motor turns on and off with the switch and I don't what white and green are to meter and how to access the motor. The switch appears fine, but I do not know what it should read.

I have spent all morning on Google trying to fix my wifes old iPod so I thought I would Google your motor problem also. It seems the 2 most common problems are melted wires under the cover and burnt brushes. I also found a Minn Kota service place that may be close to you.

I bought a new bow-mounted Minnkota trolling motor for my center console in June 2011. It would not work initially. I took it to a Minnkota service center near Rt 83 and the MD/PA border. The guy found that the copper wire wraps had not been done properly and were scraping inside the housing. Eventually it burned up the switch. The service center replaced the damaged parts at no cost.

I used the motor a few times that fall and early in the summer. Then it stopped working last summer. The original repair shop was no longer a licensed Minnkota dealer. This time I took it to Chucks (as mentioned above). He found that some wires inside the rotating handle had come loose and repaired them at no cost. It has worked ever since.

You can find your nearest Minnkota service center at http://www.minnkotamotors.com/service/asclocator.aspx. Good luck.

Oops, my prowler trolling motor project hit a snag. This is what second hand motors gets you involved in. I had a former friend that insisted on trading me this Endura 40 for two old smaller motors so he could make more money on his yard sale. >

Come to find out the seals all look good, so the motor must have been submerged at one point. The motor worked for a short period of time before the brushes in the top pic failed and are wide open.

The housing (Magnet) and armature should clean up just fine as it was working before until the brushes failed. New brushes, brush housing and seal and it should be like a new motor.

Posting this for anyone that thinks they can't repair their own trolling motor. One nut to hold on the prop, two bolts to hold on the magnet housing and two bolts hold on the brushes housing.

The damaged brushes housing to be replaced

          The motor housing/Magnet

And the armature that needs cleaning up.

[EDIT] two brushes, 1 brush assembly and 1 O-Ring shipped from fish307.com for $21.21
          Minn Kota Trolling Motor Part - O-RING - 701-041 ----------------------- 1 - $0.19 --- $0.19
          Minn Kota Trolling Motor Part - BRUSH PLATE W/HOLDER 3.25" - 738-030--1 - $11.69---$11.69
          Minn Kota Trolling Motor Part - BRUSH ASSEMBLY - 188-055 -------------2 - $1.19----$2.38

I agree with Memory Maker -- your investigative and problem solving skills are quite good. It also takes a bit of self-confidence and nerve to start taking something apart (in my own experience, that has not always ended well).

Well, I do internet research and then jump in. I have rebuilt my entire house and added a 3 car garage. This is simple compared to much of that.

Having the parts on order I waited until it got warm and cleaned everything well. Here is the commutator on the armature polished and ready for the new brushed. I just put the shaft in the drill and spun it slowly in my hand until it polished up. Use 220 grit sand paper.

Note to self and anyone else listening. I cleaned the armature before spinning it. I should have sanded it and then cleaned it, or cleans and let dry for a day and then spun it. the centrifugal force was throwing WD40 everywhere. Patience has never been one of my stronger qualities.

I have a minn Kota 30# unit for free if u like. Barely been used. At the time when I was too cheap to buy a foot control I was modifying an old motor guide foot control to accept the composite shaft but soon lost interest because i ended up finding a deal on a used one and now it sits. The actual motor and shaft on the minn Kota was not touched. All wires intact.

Also the steering controls for the motor guide is still intact so you could use that unit I have and make a stick steer with it. Just an idea. Let me know if you want it. Otherwise I may throw it out.

Shoot, if you are throwing it out, yes I will take it. Where are you located? I obviously don't live near you but I might make it to one of the meat and greats or will be at the Susquehanna Jamboree if you are coming to any of them. Off to Phoenix so, so I will be out for a couple of days unless I get bored in the hotel.

OK, I am back at it with fishing weather coming soon. I did not even want to work on it this morning. Man it felt cold in the Garage!!

I bought this plug for the Motor from Cabelas. It does not have a plug cover, but I think I will get rubber stopper from Lowes to keep the rain out traveling until I come up with something better. Its a BIG plug!!

And it on the motor and on the kayak

I wanted the speed control on the center console and did some thinking about it today. It would be really nice there but without the rod pod like the new ones, it would be very difficult to get at if it needed service/repair. The speed control just required a 5/8" hole and a slot to be cut.

                          The inside before I started.

The inside after I cleaned up the webbing to make room for the speed control

The backside with the speed control glued in with RTV glue

                          The front side after gluing
"If you can't have fun doing it, it ain't worth doing." ... or you're just doing it wrong.

Took it our to trout fish. Just an excuse to get it out. No fish for me, but I spent more time tending to me 15 year old daughter "Daddy, my line is tangled." "Daddy, I don't like cutting worms." Sigh.

But I dropped the battery in and ran the motor just for a short time. I had a 1/2" to 3/4" of water in the rear tank well which I always had some, Now I just got a hair more.

                              Speed 3

Speed 4 this fluctuated. I think 3.6 was more normal. But 5 was a whole 1mph faster and noticeable

                              Speed 5

I think 2 got me around 1.8 Mph and would be nice to troll.

Great job on your setup. Looks really good.

What app is this? I need to do the same thing with my setup and see how fast I'm going.
