  • My idea for mounting my Fish Finder.

So I've looked around and read up on different ideas for rigging a fish finder. I store my kayak upside down on the top of my jeep when I'm transporting it. And a lot of times I load my kayak up on my own so when I'm sliding it up and onto my roof racks I don't want to have to worry about damaging the unit by bumping it or even something happening to it while I'm on the road.

So I figured I wanted to set it up where I could easily pull it off the deck when need be. I think I'm going to go with the idea of using some industrial strength velcro to keep the unit on the deck. I'm only running a garmin echo 150, so it's not very big and heavy. I've seen a couple other people mount their FF to the deck using industrial velcro and they've said it worked.

Anyways on to some questions I have
    1. Has anyone here mounted their FF this way?
    2. What kind of adhesive would I want to use to put the bottom of the velcro to the deck? I have no problem with the velcro piece becoming a permanent part to the kayak
    3. Does anyone have any other suggestions for setting it up in a similar way that the unit can easily be taken off and on when transporting?

    Thanks dudes.

Mount the ball to your deck and take off the unit when not on the water.

I use my standard Hummingbird mount and screwed it onto the Mod Pod. I take the FF off when I transport or hang the yak.

In addition to this.....use this product from Hook 1 to feed your transducer and battery cable through. It makes a clean set up. With both the ram mount and this, you'll be all set and it'll look at lot more professional.

I tried using velcro to mount my battery box inside the hull. As soon as it dipped below freezing the condensation froze and the velcro adhesive quit. Using marine silicone adhesive would be overkill and for that kind of permanence you could have a much more durable bolt on solution.

I went with a RAM mount on the center console of my cuda. Taking off everything but the ball is pretty low profile and if you bolted it below the side rails there wouldn't be an issue.

A new product that I am considering is the YakAttack CellBlok since my kayak has slidetrax rails. Give it a look.

My wife got me the same ff for Xmas. I found a suction cup mount that we got in at work recently for mounting to a windshield. It is made by RAM. The cups are super strong and if it holds to the yak could be a much easier system. If it tests well I will let you know.

Here's a picture of my FF mount

When I'm done I take the FF off, loosen the ball and fold the whole assembly down. Since it sits below the top of my kayak I don't have any problems when storing it upside down.

A lot of great options for mounting more than just a FF.

I used this fitting to run my cables thru the hull to my battery. You just need to cut the extra threading if you don't want it sticking inside your hull.

How does the Liquid Tite fitting work? My FF wires need a 1/2" hole to get the connector through but the wires themselves are much smaller.

They come in two pieces. One half threads through the hole you drill in the yak. It has a washer on the other end to tightly affix it to the yak. The other piece theads back on to the first piece. As you tighten it down, there are "teeth" (for lack of a better word) that clamp and form a tight seal around thewires. You can loosen and tighten it as needed. If you need to have more wire exposed to reach your FF you are not forced to leave it out all the time because it can pulled back tight to the yak simply by loosening the first piece and unclamping the "teeth".

Oh that definitely sounds more practical than Goop. I started to try Goop to seal the 1/2" hole I drilled in my battery box and realized how difficult that was. JB Weld did the job but it will probably still need a little goop to seal it completely. I will definitely use the liquid tite fitting for the wires going through the body of the yak.
