I can't answer the battery question, but I've been slowly gathering materials to make one of these myself. I'm planning on having a SPDT switch to run the pump. One direction will run it a the full 12V from the battery, the other will run through a buck converter to run the pump at 5V to help extend the battery. I envision filling the livewell at 12V and maintaing with the 5V setting.

Sweet! Not a bad deal at all especially for the capacity! I got a Engel livewell that I am looking forward to try out this weekend. It's not nearly as big, but I might look into putting a pump on it so I can keep the water fresh.

I spent about ~$200 on it. I kinda went over budget, but all in all, I am happy how it turned out.

It is mainly to keep Spots for live lining and to keep my crabs alive.

I turn it on and off every 10-15 minutes or so. I was out in the Bay for 5-6 hours this past weekend and the battery ran just fine.

          SWEET!
Your live well looks very professional. Bring the production costs down and you might have a profitable product there.

Thank you for the kind words. It really isn't that hard to make. I think most people would enjoy making their own, and put their own twist to it.

After some research, I found out that most parts can be ordered from Amazon for a fraction of the price I paid for from the brick and mortar stores.

Is that the 40 or 60 lbs pet food container?

Looks like the 40 to me. That's what I plan in using. I've been gathering part slowly for a project like this.

Yeah, I think I might get one of these put together in the next few months.

I was thinking of using something like this http://www.amazon.com/Attwood-Corpor...6K6/ref=sr_1_1 to allow the pump to pull fresh water up through a scupper.

It is the 40. I think 60 will be too big and heavy.

                      Flag pole is from YakAttack.

That's the pump I'm going to use.

Just make sure that your drain holes are big enough to drain the tank properly. From my initial use, 360 gph fills my tank pretty fast and have to turn it off once in a while to keep the tank from over filling. The pump in the link is a 500 gph. Just keep that in mind when you are building your kit.
