Fished Weems from 8-12. Trolled all the way up the creek to 50 and drifted back down hitting all the shaded coves along the way. Caught lots of perch up to 11" on gold spinner with Gulp alive minnow and sassy shad bodies. Char/Glitter sassy shad caught the bigger perch, as well as 3 nice pickeral. Water very turbid maybe 6" visibility, which is why I think the Char/Glitter shad body with the gold spinner worked better than anything else. Saw lots of bait pods and surface swirls also. The creek has come alive!

Nice work on the perch and pickerel. I haven't caught any pickerel this year. I might have make a trip up there to get my pick fix. What size shads were you using?

Thanks for the report and great job. With this new Intel i might be heading to the Rhode river later this week to sling some beetle spins under the docks.

I need to add some more fish to my diet.

I just came back from the Rhodes this afternoon to do some pier crabbing for an hour with the wife. We caught 5 crabs to take home tonight, yum. I plan on adding them to a soup. While we were there, there were fish jumping everywere. I was not sure what type they were, but I am thinking perch and small rocks. The activity seemed to start and lasted from 6pm to 8:30pm. They were so many fish jumping around and splashing that I almost wanted to go home and get my kayak for some night fishing. I think mepp spinners would work. Some other anglers were on the peir using beetlespind and bloodworms, but they did not get a bite. I met another kayaker that was crabbing from a kayak. He caught 34 crabs and kept 22. Not bad by himeself. I spoke to him for alittle while and told him about Snaggedline.com.

first post - Weems Creek perchin'

Hi guys. I have been fishing from a kayak for nearly a decade now. I am a tall and large person, so I started with the very stable Ocean Kayak Drifter. Three years ago I fished with kayak fishing guide, Cory Routh, who put me in a Native Watercraft Manta Ray 14. I liked the feel of that boat so much, I bought one the following winter.

I often post on the Tidalfish kayak board, but I only learned about this MK website last weekend, and joined then. This is my first post. I live in Annapolis and frequently make short kayak fishing trips in the Severn River and its tributaries, especially in Weems Creek. I had a hot, but fun morning yesterday as I explored a new (to me at least) technique to catch perch.

I launched in Weems Creek Thurs morning about 8:15 am. It was already hot and not a whisper of breeze was blowing across the glassy surface. I decided to try out a few spots on the way to the creek mouth to see if any fish were biting. Initially, I tried my usual casting and retrieving. That was not at all productive. I eventually got to a stretch of shoreline that always looks fishy, but which typically does not produce well using casted lures. I decided to troll very slowly (~1 mph) through this area with three 5'6" ultralight rods using several different types of small baits (ULTT - ultra light tackle trolling).

My normal paddling rate would have been much too fast. I had to use a paddling cadence of stroke, stroke, gliiiiiiiide, to keep the lures moving slowly.

All three rods produced perch. All of the lures I used today were small and had either a paddle tail or a spinner blade, or both.

I made a bunch of passes along the same 75-yard stretch of shoreline and caught perch almost every time. Apparently, the fish in that region prefer a slow trolled lure to one that is cast out and retrieved. I stayed as close to the shore as I could but far enough out to avoid sunken tree branches.

I later paddled down-river a ways and slow-trolled some other open river shorelines. The technique worked there too. I ended up catching several dozen perch and kept two for a lunch appetizer.

Welcome John! Good bunch here. We actually have an informal meet & greet scheduled for the 2nd Saturday of every month. Someone sorta takes lead organizes for areas they are familiar with. Welcome John. It is a great group of Anglers here. I know Cory and he is a great guy. Me and a few other Anglers on this board fish Weems and the Severn River. I am just West of Bowie on off of Rt 50, so it takes me 20-25 mins to get the Severn. I am glad the perch are now there and thanks for showing us the rigs that you were using. I may have to try some of them at the M&G on Saturday at PLO.
