    Mattawoman 5/30

Sweet glad you liked it....I always try to get a shot of the launch In my videos for those doing research. They do have a specific kayak launch too. I launched from the mattingly park area....but something tells me I will be launching from ft. Smallwood next time.....this place is covered in heavy vegetation. Both sides are covered and can be several hundred yards between you and the shore. Be sure to check the tide. My first two times here I was not prepared and got skunked.

I was constantly picking the grass off my Texas rigged punch setup from the mats this time.

I bought my punch rod at the harrisburg outdoor show specifically for this body of water. Threw on 50lb braid too. .....I'd research how to catch those carp....if you do you'll snag a monster 4 footer!

Hopefully someone with more experience with tidal waters can chime in for you. Cuz my understanding is fish come in with the tide and go out with it.

But I love cover and structure....and there is plenty there!

Yakie_Noodle is correct. The bass will frequently flood into the shallows at high tide because the baitfish will be up there as well. However, the bass can be scattered and harder to locate at high tide as they can roam about. As the tide starts to go out the bass have to pull back to deeper water but they will sit in spots where the current gets funneled towards them delivering food. Outgoing tides and low tides put bass in predictable locations. Moving water generally helps the bite. Slack water can lead to a slow bite as the bass simply wait for a better feeding opportunity.

last two hours of outgoing and first hour of incoming are usually your best oppurtunity to load the boat . moving water and fish positioned on edges of cover make finding them easy . the tide on the potomac is not as important to catching as it is elsewhwere because you can catch em on all cycles there if you got them figured out . i remember denny brauer fishing a spot during a tournament years ago and moving with the same fish instead of running the tides like most do in a bassboat . in a kayak you will be wise to time your launches around the best tides but anytime you can go fishing is a good time .if you ever fish an eastern shore river , you will only practice casting until the tide gets low and slow .

I have had better luck at Mattawoman on the falling tide- the snakeheads usually are back in the weeds and lilly pads but so are some monster bass- Real target frogs and buzz baits, weedless rigged soft plastics, and orginal floating Rapala used as a top water bait have all produced some really nice fish there- I fish the upper sections up to the 225 bridge

Don't you need a tidal license there?

Mattawoman is considered tidal below the 225 bridge. Below the bridge you need the MD bay sport, PRFC or VA salt water license. Here's a link to MD's fresh/tidal dividing lines. http://www.eregulations.com/maryland...ividing-lines/

fished an outgoing tide at mattawoman yesterday from 830 am to about 330 pm or so. fished the heavy vegetation and shallows without a single hit... saw plenty of fish breaking the surface. even had a snakehead hurdle over a log and almost land in my boat! threw texas rigged worms, frogs, spinners, chatterbait, bass jig w/ craw trailer but no luck

launched from mattingly avenue park and made our way up the creek towards the 225 bridge.

if anyone with more experience is going on a weekend sometime, i would love to join and learn a few things!
