So after trying closer locations that still remain locked in ice I decided to give HDG a try. The ramp is plowed out but ice still extends out about 15-20 ft. past the waters edge. It a pretty easy drag through the snow to the little point (red arrow) where it is easy enough to put in. The bite was mostly slow but there are fish there. I found fish in 30-40 fow along the edge of some of the deeper holes. As usual you have to pick through the smaller ones to find the keepers.

Yeah the flats are still ice, but the river seems to be opening up. Based on the forecast I think the 6th might actually work out.

Awesome! I havent successfully targeted yellow perch. Is it a light bite when they take the minnow?

Nice catch John! It looks like that ice has already broken up some.

Reel-em-in, Yep the river it self was wide open.

Barely a tap. Sometimes there's just weight there. The way I imagine it they swim up to your bait and just slurp... and then just sit there.

Here's a quick video on how to tie a perch rig for newcomers. I use these for fishing minnows but you can also tie them with jig heads and use plastic grubs

Weather permitting I'm hoping to be there for fishing, but unfortunately I have to return home instead of joining you for lunch. I've not used minnows before so I'm wondering where I can get them up there, and whether there is any special holding conditions for them in winter. Is the standard yellow minnow bucket over the side good enough?

The yellow bait bucket is perfect, it's what most of us use. Just tie it off and throw it overboard. 1/2 pint will last the whole day....it's around a few dozen minnows. You can get them the night before and keep them in the house or garage. They last for days if you have an aerator/bubbler. Closest place around here is Bowleys Bait and tackle. Sometimes a few members will take an order and square away at the parking lot before launch.

Got it Eric....it's looking to be a great day. Low winds predicted and the temps this week will clear out any ice
