  • Good deal????

My friend wants to join us in kayak fishing. He is a pretty big guy. Around 300 pounds. He just sent this to me. Seems like a great deal. Can anyone tell me why he shouldn't buy this? He wants to fish the key bridge, bay bridge and also be able to fish the rivers. prowler.jpg

Great kayak, will handle any water you would want to fish. Not sure how it would pair up with a big guy. I have a Trident 13 he's welcome to try out and would help him make a good decision. They're basically identical hulls. I am in Fallston if he'd like to try it out.

I'm a big guy and regularly flirt with a 3 in my weight, guess I'm kind of married to it lately. Getting up and down in a kayak is a major obstacle when you are on the portly side. In a regular sit on top I kind of have to roll off the side into the water (and not in an elegant feet first way) - you need some sort of leverage for your arms to assist in hauling your butt up. I recognize that it's expensive but the PA nicely accommodates my weight and allows me relatively easy access in and out of the boat by having the arm rails. Before he spends the money I'd have him tryout a "regular" kayak to see how hard it is for him to do ingress and egress.

He ordered it already. I spend too much time researching, he pulled the trigger after 5 minutes.

He already ordered it. I live in Forest Hill and he lives in Abingdon. Perhaps we can meet up at some point. I fish the lower Susky a good bit.

That was a hell of a good deal. It's back up to $950. He may be wiser than you think pulling the trigger so quickly. Price discounts on Amazon like that can disappear in minutes. Even if it doesn't work for him he can turn around and sell it for a profit.

Here is a link to a youtube video of a bigger guy in one. It will be a very wet ride. He might want to pick up some scupper plugs. Also at only 28" wide the yak can be a bit tippy at times (my tarpon is the same) it will handle the weight but he might want to upgrade in a bit. Even when I had a scrambler the seat to me was a little narrow for my taste. But time will tell if he likes it or not. Also if he doesn't want to spend a ton on scuppers he can also use those foam golf balls.

That's pretty awful. It may not be the boat for him. The guys seems to have a point. I thought with the 475 lb rating he'd be good to go. Seems not.

IMHO it is smart to go to a kayak dealer demo day before buying. You can peddle or paddle 15 makes and styles of kayaks in one day. With that option open to you why would you not? Can probably google kayak demo day.

Ocean kayaks tend to have a low water line. They claim to carry 350 400lbs and so on BUT because the scuppers sit so low they tend to be a wetter ride. The only exception I've seen is the big game 2, but again it has high sides. This yak should work for him but might want to upgrade for next season to a more "big guy yak" Ride 135, xfactor, stealth 14, moken 14, big rig, cuda 14, big game 2 just to name a few. Also I do agree the demo day will give you a decent amount of info on actual working deck space, feel of the seat, how low the kayak is to the water..... I would recommend taking the trip to farmville VA they have the largest demo around this area. Dont let the kayak be off putting. May not be the best fit but usually your first kayak wont be your last.

I just checked, if you look over on the right corner there is a tab that says "Sold by: Amazon.com exclusively for Prime members" and it is still $699. That seems like a really good deal.

Academy sports has been running that same price all year. If there are any non prime members. That is another way to go.

Ha! I am the same way. I will research things to death. One thing, with my Kayak, I had the higher seat. I am 6' 3' 240 lbs. The kayak seemed unstable. I swapped a guy for a lower seat--huge difference. I hope it works out for your friend.
