  • Emergency Hobie Repair

Well out was out with Surfdog crabbing and exploring the crab alley area. We did catch a dozen crabs between the two of us. I used mostly 6 topless crab cages. Surf used the hand line technique. We were only out from 6:15am to 10:00am. Surf and I also caught 1.5 inch Rockfish, the smallest ever and Surf caught a few spots and perch. Around 9am I had a mishap. My left steering cable on my Hobie Revo snapped causing my kayak to turn suddenly with no control. This caused the crab cages that I was just finished stacking to fall into the abyss, never to be seen again....at least they were old cages.

Now I got to get my steering cable fixed under warranty before the OC M&G. I guess I will be seeing if Eaton Kayak can fix it quick so I can make the trip with Pinch. I called Backyard Boats, but they said that they would have to ship it to their WoodBridge location to fix it. It would take a week and a half. That is too long for me, since I want to make the M&G. So I guess I will be heading to Easton Kayak on Monday after work. It should be a simple repair. I would look into doing it myself, but it is under warranty.

Sorry to hear that, Martin. It wouldn't surprise me if the left (port) side rudder cables are prone to breaking. I think that's an additional flaw of the stupid twist and stow rudder.

Bummer, Martin! Sorry to hear that. Those "cables" aren't much. I looked at them with suspicion and surprised not to hear more of that problem. Hopefully Easton can fix you up quickly.

Well, it seems like I have some good news. I went to Backyard Boats and they had a partial repair kit that they were willing to sell me since it had the part that I needed at a cheap price. I then took the part to Easton Kayak and they said that they would have the kayak for my by Friday morning or even by Weds. I hope that I can get it on Weds before I go to the M&G. I also called Hobie and since I paid for the warranty repair kit, they were going to send me one to my house that I can hold as a spare. Easton will do the repairs under warranty. It is a good thing that I had called Hobie. It turns out that there was a short time when the Revo's were made that the hole where the steering cables came out near the rudder, were not made smooth and was sharp. That sharp edge is what cut my cable. So Hobie said that they will call Easton and make sure that they file the edge down so this issue will not happen again.

So all I can say is a big thanks to everyone involved.

Thanks to Dennis at Backyard Boats in getting me the cable repair kit that I needed.

Thanks to Ryan at Easton Kayak for repairing the boat for a Weds or Friday pickup.

And thanks to Hobie for sending me a spare repair kit and identifying why my cable snapped and how to fix it so that this does not happen again.

Great service from all that were involved.

Good to hear, Martin. Did Hobie give you a range of hull numbers that had that problem? I wonder if mine is one of them. I think we got our yaks at around the same time.

No range of numbers. It was just a general statement Hobie made to me as to why the line snapped.
