Hi. I'm Yinzguy and I'm new here. Most of my fishing is in western Pa. so any help I can get for finding nice kayaking places and good fishing (any kind) would be appreciated.

Welcome. I do not live in PA, but I know some kayakers that travel to the Susky at Havre de Grace in MD.

I moved down here from Ligonier in 2014. Where abouts are you from? I'm in Annapolis and would be happy to take you out to a few spots. I have a second kayak you can use if needed.

There's a lot of different fishing opportunities down here. Trout isn't as good as PA, but there're some decent spots. Striper and perch fishing is the main focus in the bay when it warms up. Snakehead is everyone's newest obsession for good reason. They fight hard and are tasty to eat.

Sounds good to me. I live in College Park but my daughter lives in Annapolis. I'm from north of Johnstown and have a camp in Forest County. Before I retired and had more time, that's where I pretty much did all my fishing. I never even got a Md. license till eight years ago, and even then, most of that was trout fishing so I'm really a kid
when it comes to serious fishing for anything else.

Ah sorry, I didn't realize you lived here, I read your first post as you were still in the western PA area... We are practically neighbors, I'm in Berwyn Heights. I go to Lake Artemesia and bank fish (sometimes with the kids, sometimes solo when I don't have time to get the kayak out and go on a longer trip) to fish for the put and take stocked trout (pretty dumb animals, nothing like the wild trout I'm guessing you're used to). There's also a few bass and a bunch of small sunfish/bluegill that are fun on an ultralight or fly rod, though it gets pressured pretty heavily and grows a ton of SAV during the summer. I've seen snakehead in there with my own eyes as well but haven't caught one yet, and have been told it holds crappie as well but I haven't found them either. Otherwise it's a bit of a drive to any of the spots I launch the kayak-usually mattawoman creek (ramp) down in indian head area or jonas green state park (beach launch) close to annapolis but I'm in a similar boat as you re: wishing I knew some better locations to set out from. Both of those launches/areas can get pretty busy in the summer as well. I'm on my phone so don't have the bookmark handy but aaco has a list of all their boat launches online.

Sorry to hear about the snakehead. I fish Artemesia like you, spur of the moment type stuff. Hate to bust your bubble though... the trout in Pa. are mostly stocked trout. They don't spawn in freestone creeks which is what most streams are up there. Mabey we can get together sometime and find a good place to fish.

                  Yinzguy, Justin,

I'm an old Terp graduate. I spent a lot of days in College Park and I know where Berwyn Heights is.

I have fished at Cash Lake which is not far from you:

                  https://www.fws.gov/refuge/Patuxent/visit/fishing.html

You will have to get a permit from the wildlife center there but that's no big deal.

During my school days, I commuted from Anne Arundel County to College Park. There are good tidal launch sites in the county other than Jonas Green you may want to consider. I'd guess most are within 30-40 miles of where you live. You can find them here:

Going to try my luck for Perch at Mattawoman (never been there) on Thursday (3-11). Any suggestions? Is it too early? Anything else biting? Just got my second shot and I'm going nuts to do something NORMAL.

You might get some yellow perch and possibly crappie. I would bring some gear and bait for blue catfish. They move through the creek year round. Where are you launching?

That's where you want to be. Good luck!

I'm heading over to the millponds tomorrow for some pickerel on the fly and maybe some trout out of the creeks

Will do. I think the fish have seen a lot of pressure from the CCA tournament, and showing them flies got me more bites on my last trip (including a 24-incher that gave me the win for the fly fishing division)
