one more piece of info - if you have technical questions regarding humminbird products - the 'unofficial humminbird forum' is the place to go. factory reps like Humminbird Greg are online a lot and answer questions fast.

ps - i'm HBshopper over there

i think you want all 3 in one view. Left imaging, down imaging, and right imaging. Then you know whats going on... for structure, I'd guess that side imaging would only give you the height (top to bottom) and width (left to right) of the structure. You would also need down imaging to get the depth (front to back) of the structure.

So barebones, the system shows you 3 views. With a bit of computation, it compiles it all into one 3-D view.

Also, you must consider the practical implications of a side imaging unit: the transducer must be below the yak... not in-hull and not on the side.

When I bought my fish and chip it said USA EAST on the package. However, don't guess, the areas are outlined in the West Marine catalog. In the 2011 catalog it is on page 22. I am not sure about the 2012 catalog. They have just come out within the last few days.

                  Don,
Maybe you can post the different models that are relevant to most of us? The Navionics website shows 3 groups. Within the marine group the Chesapeake would be on 1XG which, includes all of the coastal USA including CA, Hawaii and Alaska. Cheapest I've found is on eBay at $183.

I found a model, 16XG which is just the East Coast. That's all I'd want. But, from what I've found so far the price is only about $30 less than the 1XG. I'm not sure it's valid since there's no mention on the Navionics website.

                  Tks.

+1 Chexone, Navionics does not make it clear!

I checked out the small lowrances at bass pro the other day... the one on display showed contour lines and was about $200 I think. I think that's the best price I've seen anywhere.

Anyone know how much more the kayak scupper mount is?

i could not re-find the compatibility page,...

i have the navionics gold sd, 1xg. it has some user-selected options for contours and shading. mine is set on 15' contour interval/shading. i'm not sure if i can get more contours than that. also not sure if i can pull up local tidal/current information. supposedly, this will be graphed for the 'station' nearest to the actual chartplotter physical location. there are instructions in my manual to do it using the 'info' button but i haven't had the chance to try it to see if the gold chart supports that function.

i found my chip for 168 incl'g shipping. not as cheap as i would like. might be able to get a better package deal with Jim at BOE. in retrospect, it wouldn't hurt to ask.

Fish and Chip: USA EAST: MSD/FISH-E

                            Gold: All USA & N. Bahamas: MSD/1XG

This is how Navionics labels the package, such as USA East for Fish and Chip. The last number is the Navionics part number. The Gold has alot of information for cruisers, such as port information and marina information. As kayakers you may not need this information. I think the Fish and Chip and the Gold are $199 at West Marine. Better check the latest price. It has been a while since I looked at these.

Also, keep in mind that West Marine will price match. It must be a regular price from a regular company such as Defender, Cabelas, Bass Pro. Just print out the page or bring it up on your smart phone to show them at the store. They won't match E-Bay, because that is not a regular company. Alot of that stuff are close outs or out of business sales.

PS: Fish and Chip show changes in depths as little as one foot. They also can be updated.

Sorry ...... should have said the head mount not the transducer mount ....... I'll use either a transducer mount on the side or back that is removable ...... and yeah ...... the Lowrances seem to be closer to or cheaper than the Hummers but i haven't done any full comparisons so I could be wrong

I'm just excited to find something that shows contours without a chip. I didn't have a chance to confirm though, the demo showed it, but there wasn't a rep there to talk to and I was in a hurry.
