TW we have all been there. My advice is to take your kayak out a couple times to get familiar with it then you will get a guage where you want your accessories. When its time I can come help you. As mentioned when you use silicone or marine goop everything will be nice and sealed. Now If I need to install something I habe no issues drilling.

Also consider attending the March 3 meet and greet at Jonas Green park in Annapolis. You can see lots of kayaks rigged out for fishing. You may be able to talk some of the guys into letting you sit in their boats onshore or in the water.

Like several of the other posters, I am a very large person (6'4" and 245 lbs). My first kayak (Ocean Kayak Drifter) is very stable, supports a large body, and turns on a dime, making it great for fishing shorelines and structure. It was a great first boat. Grady Black has a nice looking Drifter for sale at the swap meet this weekend.

A few years ago, I purchased a Native Watercraft Manta Ray 14. This boat tracks straighter and paddles faster. It has more space and an extremely comfortable seat, allowing even a big, old guy like me to stay in the boat for up to 4 hours at a time.

I recognize that cost is always an important consideration. But saving a few dollars to buy an inexpensive boat that does not perform (and therefore does not get used) is not a good choice.

Just to avoid confusion, thought I'd clarify that the Swap Meet is on March 3 in Pasadena, Md at the end of Rt 100 at Mountain Rd at the Lake Shore Volunteer Fire Hall and the March M&G is on March 10 at Jonas Green park in Annapolis on the Severn.
