  • SurfDog's Sat M&G At Jonas Green

Hey, SurfDog, do we have an actual time that we are going to meet in the morning at Jonas? Also, are we meeting at Griffins at 12 or 1pm?

    Griffins Restaurant & Bar
    22 Market Space
    Annapolis, MD 21401
    (410) 268-2576

Is above address the correct address for Griffins?

I've never had a problem with it, but technically you are not supposed to park in the lower lot at Jonas Green before sunrise. I think if you are going to be around your car and not launch until around sunrise, you probably wont have a problem. If I'm launching before sunrise, I will usually park in the upper lot.
            Good Luck guys!

It's going to be tough for me to get there before 7, but I'll try my best. I'll catch up with you guys on the water. Save a 20-incher for me.

Be sure to check out the maps J.A. Veil posted... they're pretty much a key to the area. I will take the liberty of posting them again here, but props to J.A for supplying them in the other M&G thread (http://www.snaggedline.com/showthread.php?t=2718).

For pickerel, it sounds like we need to head for the creeks. So, 2,3,4,5,6 & 8 on the map are within easy paddle... 1 & 7 if you're more adventurous.

For stripers, if any are in the area, they're likely to be near the launch along the bridge pilings. The fishing pier right there is the remnant of an old bridge that was sunk, so there is debris extending from it going across the river. Might be able to pull a striper or perch from there, although as J.A. and others have stated, not much luck there lately. J.A.'s second map indicates the location of oyster beds over which stripers might be hanging out as well.

If I get there early, I'll probably hang out and jig around the bridge as I wait for others to arrive. We can then decide on a direction to go in search of pickerel.

                  HTH.

What are you using for the pickerel. I have never fished for them before.
Are you just using 1/4 oz jig heads with tails for stripers?

I don't know how I feel about this light tackle stuff yet.

I use 1/8oz heads for pickerel, but keep the 1/4oz handy. Potentially, you could even use 1/16oz. If your lures are too heavy, you'll just plow up the slime on the bottom.

I like 2-3" curly tail grubs, in white or chartreuse, of course. I've also caught pickerel on 2" Storm Shads and small floating Rapalas. Those are probably my go-to lures now after my trip to the Severn in December. I've heard that small Husky Jerks work really well, but I've never tried them. They'll hit spinners, too. All the pickerel I've caught this year have hit things with chartreuse on them, either full chartreuse or firetiger. I haven't had as much luck with white this year.

In addition to casting along shore, also try jigging the lure directly under your yak at the end of a retrieve. I've caught some of my largest pickerel that way. Casting toward deeper holes (5-7ft) works, too.

In addition to the map of the Severn that shows 8 creeks/coves, I took satellite images of each creek from Google maps and marked the physical locations of where I have caught fish. You can understand why I am not willing to post that information electronically. But I will let other MKF members take a look at those sheets (keep your cell phone cameras in your pockets ). I will bring that pack of photos with me tomorrow. I don't know when I will get to Jonas Green, but it will almost certainly be well after sunrise. For those of you who are starting early -- good luck. Dress warmly.

I have good news about the pickerel bite this week. Aesiegel and I did some recon on Wed in one creek and caught 11 or 12 fish between us. I fished another creek by myself today and had my best pickerel day of the winter. I caught 8 fish in the first 45 minutes, and ended with 14 fish caught and 6 other fish that bit, shook their heads, and let go. I will attach some photos on a separate post.

High tide tomorrow is at 6:27 am and low tide is at 12:43 pm. The wind forecast is for 15 mph from the NW dropping to 12 mph from the N by noon. The temperature will be cool all morning (32 deg at 7:00 am rising to only 39 by noon).

This afternoon I hit a very low tide with the wind blowing strongly directly downriver. That wind will continue overnight and may drive out even more water by tomorrow. I anticipate low water levels. According to the Annapolis tidal gauge, the water level at noon today was almost one foot lower than anticipated due to tidal cycles alone.

I will bring my box of lead heads tomorrow in case anybody wants some. I will also bring the new CarrotStix rod I ordered from Gander Mt on their half price sale. It has microguides -- in case you have never seen them, they have an unusual look to them.

Will the Pickerel bite through a 14lb mono leader?

The pickerel that I have lost this winter were not due to bite-offs from their teeth -- rather they were typically breaks offs when the fish lunges. Their jaw structure can rub across the line and weaken it. Plus when you have your hand on the line or leader a few inches above the lure in preparation for lifting the fish, then the fish lunges, that sudden change in direction can break a line. I think a 14-lb leader will be just fine. Most of the time I fish 8-lb mono with no leader. Some days I tie on 20-lb fluoro leader because that is the leader material I have on hand.
