Have you turtled?

Yup fall 2011 @ the BB. It was a calm day, but I got lazy and anchored, didn't feel like paddling up to the pilings. I leaned too far to the left and by the time I realized I was too far over, I flipped. There was a boat nearby that helped me back in and gather my floating stuff. I lost my orange safety flag, a pair of pliers, and a knife. Everything else was either tied down or floated.

Nope, don't have any desire to experience it, either. I am always mindful of the possibility and believe if you are very careful and think before you act you can avoid this experience. In winter it scares the daylights out of me and I am even more careful...I never lean out nor turn around in my yak to get something behind me- if I need something, I sit side saddle to get it. There is nothing you can do if you are run over by a power boat...and it can happen...I have had two occasions where I yelled and waved my paddle over my head to warn off high speed boats to keep from being run down- once was at Cobb Island...a 27 foot Cigarette was running wide open and came within 50 feet of me...the wave hit me in the chest and nearly lifted me completely out of the cockpit even though I was holding on for dear life and laying down face first in the kayak...the jerk never even checked to see if I was OK...the other time was off PLO and it was a work boat pushing a big wake- evidently the captain was steering the boat from the stern and didn't see me until he was right on me...I surfed the wake and nearly broached...scary but I laughed about it afterwards- the Captain turned the boat round came back, apologized twice and asked if I wanted to get on board and ride back in with him...really a nice man.

Nope and I don't plan on it....

I could see myself maybe falling out while standing up fishing randomly, but I don't think the PA will turtle easily!!

My first trip 2 years ago in my sit in kayak, I attempted to stand up while fishing in a stream and ended up falling out. Luckily the water was only about 2 feet deep. I havnt tried standing in my sit in kayak since. I think it would take a lot to actually turtle the yaks that I have, both are pretty wide and the outback is very stable.

Ok, I'll be serious.
I haven't, but had a friend capsize after broaching. Went camping on barrier island, wind came up more than expected overnight. Deep water, not particularly warm. A few tense minutes...
A couple lessons. Be very thoughtful of weather forecasts. Paddle tether a must. And this summer when it's warm, go play in rough weather. Fair weather doesn't make good sailors...

Once, so far . I was standing in the river getting onto my yak in a current. My yak took off as soon as I was on and I headed sideways into a railroad bridge abutment with a down tree against it. I leaned away to protect these blue eyes from being poked out by the branches. NEVER NEVER lean away . When I leaned away, the side of the yak hit the tree and shot up and I fell out along with some stuff. The water was only about 3-4 feet deep but the current was so strong I was under the yak and surfaced between it and the tree.

Looks like a bout 1/4 of us has turtled... cool stat.

The other 75% of us just aren't fishing hard enough!
